Sustainable Development Programme

The Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM) Dean Dr Sia Bee Chuan and Head of MBA/MBA in Corporate Governance Programme Dr Pok Wei Fong, in collaboration with Tunghai University, were awarded grants by the Taiwan ROC Ministry of Education to develop MOOC courses on Sustainable Development.

This programme consists of three courses. It is jointly offered by Tunghai University (Engineering College and International College) and UTAR’s FAM. The students will be exposed to complex issues of development and the impact of development on social, economic and environment in the hopes to see a better, liveable planet for the future generations.

The courses aim to develop a holistic understanding of sustainable development from the perspectives of social, economic and environmental and to build capacity to engage in decision making based on sustainable development values and beliefs, and justify it by scientific evidence, technology know-how, and economic theory.

The course will also introduce the basic concepts of system thinking and their applications to environmental management. The students will also be taught on the different system approaches such as Life Cycle Analysis, Material Flow Analysis, Clean Production and Ecological Industry. This series of courses are targeting students from various disciplines ranging from Business Administration, Accountancy, Economics to Sciences and Engineering.

The first series on “Introduction on Sustainability Science” started on 27 February 2018. The second series on “Sustainable Environment” will commence on 10 April 2018 and the last series on “Sustainable Development and Business” will be available from 22 May 2018.
