CEE English Language Camp

The atmosphere was joyful during warm up dance

It was a well-spent Saturday for the participants who attended the English Language Camp organised by the Centre for Extension Education (CEE) on 17 March 2018 at Sungai Long Campus.

The camp saw the participation of 330 secondary school students from seven different schools, namely SMK Jenjarom, SMK Dato' Shamsudin Nain, SMK Bandar Baru Sungai Long, SMK Bandar Banting, SMK Seksyen 27, SMK Taman Forest Height and SMK Dato Mohd Said.

The camp kicked off with a lively ice breaking and warm-up dance session, which was led by CEE English Unit Head Raiza Azni binti Suhainih. The students were then divided into 15 groups for class and activities.

The camp proceeded with an intensive three-hour English lesson which was comprised of Vocabulary Review, Grammar Workshop and Presentation Skills, focusing on three important elements in becoming a good English expert. One hour was allocated for each session with interesting activities and quizzes as intervals.

Students’ participation in the class

“Compared to the previous English Language Camp, this time we ensured the students’ engagement in the classroom by conducting active learning through Q&A sessions and group activities. We also conducted more group-based activities to ensure participation from all the members,” said Raiza.

Mohammed Azim Bin Dzureil Hadi from SMK Taman Forest Heights said, “One of the things I learnt in the class is how to present in front of people. Thinking about something motivating helps one to overcome stage-fright.”

The excitement continued after the lunch break, with Lip Sync Contest and Language Race. The groups were separated for two activities that went on simultaneously.

For the Language Race, students’ English language knowledge was put to test when they were required to complete 15 tasks at 15 stations located around the campus.

“I like the game where we were asked to blow the flour in order to find paper pieces that contain questions regarding the English language,” said Lim Jern Fey from SMK Bandar Baru Sungai Long.

“When it is too many, instructions become obstruction!”

The on-going Lip sync competition

In the meantime, the other group of students was given 40 minutes to prepare for the Lip Sync Contest. Using only newspapers, balloons and creativity, the groups were required to come up with the choreography, props and a lip sync singer.

At the end of the camp, prizes were given away to the top ten groups, while the rest walked away with consolation prizes.

Negha Mohanaraj from SMK Bandar Baru Sungai Long said, “I wish the time for the activities could be stretched even longer because it was so fun.”
