UTAR President visits universities in Beijing

Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, the President of UTAR, visited several universities and organisations in China from 15 to 16 March 2018. The visits were part of the university’s expansion plan for internationalisation.

Along with the president during the visit was the Division of Community and International Networking Deputy Director Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn. The visits set to seek more collaborative opportunities with the prospective international partners for various academic activities such as student and staff exchange, research collaborations, programme advancement and information exchange.

The President visited Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) on 15 March 2018. On behalf of BJTU at the meeting were its Vice President Prof Guan Zhongliang, School of Architecture and Design Dean Prof Xia Haishan, Center for International Education Director Dr Liu Yanqing, and Office of International Affairs Director Prof Yan Xuedong. Topics discussed included staff and student exchange, student study tour, English immersion and enhancement programme, and research collaboration between UTAR and BJTU.

During the visit to China, Prof Chuah on behalf of the university signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) on 16 March 2018. Representing UCAS for the signing was its Institute of Basic Education Executive Dean Prof Wang Jinzhan. UTAR and UCAS will form a partnership for collaborations on postgraduate programmes. Also present at the MoU signing were Institute of Basic Education’s Assistants to Dean Dr Aldrich Guo and Dr Hong Chao.

Prof Chuah also visited Renmin University of China (RUC) in Beijing on 16 March 2018. Welcoming the President on behalf of RUC was its Vice President Prof Du Peng. The visit was set to explore opportunities for future collaborations between UTAR and RUC. Some collaborative prospects mentioned in the meeting included exchanges in multiple academic disciplines. The discussion also focused on the opportunities for student activities such as the student exchange programmes. Also in present at the meeting were RUC International Office for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office Deputy Director Li Zhenshi; Graduate School Admission Office Director An Zhiwei; and International Office for Asia, Africa and International Organisations Regional Coordinator He Jing.

Besides the visit to universities, Prof Chuah and Dr Lai visited Tang Chinese Education & Technology Ltd (Tang) on 15 March. The meeting aimed to identify the courses to be uploaded to Tang Chinese Education (唐风汉语) Learning Platform as well as to update the progress of the existing collaboration with Tang. Present at the discussion were Tang’s Chairman Liu Fei, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Li Jinsong and Overseas Operation Center Director Zhao Huibo.

Prof Chuah and Dr Lai also paid a visit to YongXian Culture Group Ltd on 16 March 2018. During the meeting, they learnt the vision and mission of YongXian Culture Group Ltd., and discussed collaborations on cultivating musical profession through Doctor of Philosophy at UTAR. Representatives from YongXian Culture Group Ltd at the meeting were its Chairman Dr Wang Geng, Vice Board Chairman Duan Gang, CEO Cui Ying and Secretary of the Board Dr Ma Jun.
