A lecture titled “ICU Management of ECMO Patients” was held on 26 March 2018 by the Department of Physiotherapy under UTAR Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS). Invited to deliver the lecture was a senior physiotherapist at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar, Mohammed Aleef.

Present at the lecture were Head of Physiotherapy Department Nizar Abdul Majeed Kutty, FMHS lecturers Martin Ebenezer Chellappan, Imtiyaz Ali Mir, Muhammad Noh Zulfikri bin Mohd Jamali, Swapneela Jacob and physiotherapy students.

During the lecture, Mohammed shared his experience in dealing and managing patients that rely on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). ECMO is a method used to provide cardiac and respiratory support to those whose heart and lungs are unable to perform adequately. Since most patients lay on beds for days, it is important for them to undergo physiotherapy sessions to prevent the body from deteriorating.

Videos of real cases handled by Mohammed were also shown to the students to provide better illustration and understanding.

The lecture ended with Nizar presenting a token of appreciation to Mohammed and a photo session.
