Archi-Interactive Camp 2018

AIC 2018 participants

Archi-Interactive Camp (AIC) 2018 was held from 16 March 2018 to 18 March 2018 at Asia Camp, Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor. The event, initiated by UTAR Architecture Society, was co-organised by University Malaya; co-partnered with Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship Foundation (GIEF). The AIC was endorsed by Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia(PAM) and supported by Malaysian Bamboo Society (MBS), UTAR Centre of Sustainable Architecture (COSA) and Bamboo Village Kuala Lumpur. The event was sponsored by GoodKredit, Veritas Design Group, Artmatrix, JC Visual Printing and Advertising and Appeton.

Themed ‘IKAT’, the interactive camp aimed to enhance the learning experience in design inspiration and promote bamboo architecture among architecture students. The AIC also aimed to extend social networking among architecture students to inter-university level and create a gateway for architecture students to maintain a well-balanced life as a student.

The AIC also aims to be an annual gathering, if feasible, for the architecture students from different universities and architecture society. The AIC benefits students not only in gaining the advantage of sharing knowledge under different education systems, but also to acquire the ability to connect via social networking.

The AIC also attempts to deliver an interactive form of events and activities with learning purpose, not any typical educational camping at any recreational venue. The programmes of AIC intended to encourage related architectural learning via learning experience away from the design studio. The AIC is an event with minor entity where architecture students from various universities actively interact with community alive and continue to develop a diplomatic relationship between universities.

A series of talks were conducted by experts such as Bamboo Village owner Mohd Ramadhan Abdul Hamid, Universiti Pertahanan Malaysia Dr Azrul Affandi and Tadom Bamboo Center Sdn Bhd Director Muhammad Ihsan Abdul Rahim. The talks covered topics on bamboo construction along with some demonstrations.

Among the activities held during the three-day camp were “Interactive Pondok Building”, camp missions, campfire session, singing performances, outdoor sketching, aerobic exercises, jungle trekking, river floating and ‘IKAT’ sessions.

A total of seven universities, namely UTAR, International Islamic University Malaysia, LimKokWing University, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Taylor’s University, UCSI University and University of Malaya, were present to engage in teeming life at the Asia Camp.

The committee members of AIC-UTAR are Chin Cheng Yue, Chen Bing Wei, Looi Chia Wei, Kong Wen Hui, Bong Jie Si, Mechelle Yeoh Kai Wen, Kuah Li Wei, Hee Zun Ming, Lim Wei Liang, Law Jan Shen, Lee Chun Jie, Hor Yan Qi, Cheah Wan Teng, Ng Yimian, Lu Haw Zheng, Khor Yan Chun, Wong Chuan Seng, Oh Xiao Li, Wong Zhen Ken, Yap Wei Hung, Koo Tong Fong, Chan Wei Zhe, Chen Lit Ying, Chan Shi Chein, Heng Song Jeff, Wee Zhi Shan, Julian Lee Sui-Quang, Misato Jibiki, Agatha Gan Sze Sze, Quak Yi Jane, Foo Yee Ping, Samantha Teo Yee Hui, Tai Jun Jie, Keith Tan, Jonathan Tiong Khoong Ming, Yeow Yao Liang, Yee Reah Lin, Ong Yi Yang, Tan Raixa, Lee Xin Yee, Quah Ee Lyn, Ivy Chong Pei Xin, Haw Suk Hui, Chan Kang Neng, Chee Chong Cheng, Liang Wei Zhe, Lee Sai Yuan and Siah Yu Hang.

The AIC could not be accomplished without its programme advisors, namely Head of Architecture and Sustainable Design Department (DASD) Tan Kok Hong and lecturers Abdul Rahim bin Mohd Zin and Jeremy Tew Bun Teck. The idea of AIC was initially proposed by DASD student Chen. The DASD altogether, was able to achieve a milestone, setting forth a visionary and meaningful architectural programme as such.
