THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2018

UTAR is now ranked #114 in the Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings 2018.

The ranking uses the same 13 rigorous performance indicators as the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, examining each university’s strengths against all of its core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. But the methodology has been carefully recalibrated to better reflect the characteristics and development priorities of universities in emerging economies. More weight is given, for example, to a university’s industry links and international outlook.

According to Times Higher Education, institutions from the 50 countries classified as “advanced emerging”, “secondary emerging” or “frontier emerging” economies by FTSE were considered, but only institutions from 42 of these countries made the final top 378 list. Now in its fifth year, the 2018 ranking parts with the “BRICS” acronym in the title to recognise the strength and potential of a diverse range of emerging economies. Malaysia falls under the “advanced emerging” category.

UTAR’s place in this ranking of the best research-led universities among the emerging economy nations is indeed a remarkable achievement; considering the fact that this is the first time UTAR is ranked under the emerging economies category. This inclusion means that UTAR is one of the top 378 institutions in the 42 countries included in the Times Higher Education analysis.
