Present at the ceremony were Chairman of BMMB Teacher Ling Shan, UTAR Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, Vice Chairman of the Board of BMMB Brother Xu Te, CEO of BMMB Sister Xi Cen, BMMB Sister Fu Han, other committee members of BMMB, scholarship recipients, staff and students.

“The bursary is aimed to assist students in need. Education is important, especially for the poor families. With this aid, we are not only helping them but also encouraging the students to pursue their dreams. I hope more students will apply for this scholarship so that we can work towards building a better nation,” said Teacher Ling.
UTAR JinBodhi Bursary was set up with the aim of providing financial assistance, solely in the form of tuition fees payment, for needy students to continue their tertiary education. A total of RM482,853 were disbursed to 31 UTAR students who were pursuing their foundation and bachelor degree studies. The first UTAR JinBodhi Bursary Presentation Ceremony was held in June 2018 at Kampar Campus and saw a total of 36 recipients receiving the bursary.
The bursary will be used for the recipient’s tuition fees and will not be given in cash to the recipients. Based on the agreement, eligible UTAR students in undergraduate programmes, once selected, will each receive a bursary of up to RM10,000 only per annum and up to a maximum of RM30,000 each for the full programme of study at UTAR. The bursary will be distributed over a period of three years or the remaining academic years of the recipient’s studies at UTAR. As for Foundation programmes, eligible students will each receive a maximum bursary of RM10,000 only to be distributed over a period of one year.
“For the recipients, I hope this bursary will not be merely seen as a financial assistance. I hope you all will see the values beyond the money and take it as an example on how you can offer help to those in need, not only to those that you know but to strangers as well. As this bursary helps you climb your ladder to success, always remember to give back to the society, not specifically to the ones that lend you the help, but to those in need and underprivileged,” said Prof Choong.
UTAR constantly emphasises its commitment to give back to society as part of the University Social Responsibility (USR) initiative through financial aid such as UTAR internal scholarships and loans. UTAR has so far disbursed a total of RM139.8million (as of August 2018) for internal loans and scholarships to 14,330 students since its inception. Another RM15.9million (as of August 2018) for external loans and scholarships were awarded by external sponsors to 611 UTAR students.
“My mother is a single parent. She works very hard to raise me and my sister. With the help of BMMB, I can focus on my study without worrying about the tuition fee. Thank you BMMB for reducing my mother’s burden,” said Accounting student recipient Alice Chin Yun Yee during the sharing session.
Among the recipients were Cheah Shing Yong and his twin brother Cheah Shing Dhee from Ipoh. Their father is the breadwinner of the family, raising the twins and a daughter. Shing Yong shared his alternative plan if they had not received the bursary, “We planned to postpone our study and work to cover the expenses and the cost of our study. We are grateful that we have received this bursary.”
