A group of school teachers from Chong Hwa Independent High School (Chong Hwa), Kuala Lumpur visited Sungai Long Campus on 24 October 2018. They were led by Principal Cheong Moey Lian, Vice Principal Chan Yoke Lee, Chong Chee Keong and Chu Yoke Sing.

Welcoming the visitors were UTAR Vice President for Internationalisation and Academic Development Prof Ir Dr Ewe Hong Tat, Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) Dean Assoc Prof Dr Chong Siou Wei, Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Deputy Dean Ir Dr Lim Jee Hock, Centre for Foundation Studies (Sungai Long Campus) Deputy Directors Wong Jing Tyng and Pua Gaik Hong, Division of Programme Promotion Director Lee Choy Fong, Deputy Director Irene Wong Hong Lei, and Department of Soft Skills Competency (Sungai Long Campus) Head Fook Oi Yee.

The visit aimed to build rapport and promote mutual understanding between UTAR and Chong Hwa besides discussing opportunities for future collaboration between both institutions.

Discussion on possible future collaboration between two parties

The meeting commenced with the presentation of UTAR’s corporate video and Prof Ewe’s welcome address. Prof Ewe addressed the guests and gave a brief introduction of UTAR. “Chong Hwa will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year, so I wish that UTAR can also share the happiness with Chong Hwa in this meaningful occasion,” said Prof Ewe. He also proposed to look for UTAR students who are Chong Hwa alumni to assist in the 100th anniversary celebration.

Cheong thanked UTAR for the warm welcome and expressed her eagerness to look forward to the collaboration between Chong Hwa and UTAR. Some other collaboration ideas that were proposed by Chong Hwa included seeking advice from UTAR academics and researchers on lab management and experiment planning for their tissue culture lab that will be set up soon, training session related to IT field such as arduino class, programming language and networking in order to keep up with the pace of times, and suggestion to send their students to join UTAR degree practical classes to give them a clearer idea about particular courses and to encourage further studies in higher education. Besides that, ICS also proposed to provide a training session for teachers on class management and counselling skills.

Cheong added, “We will be having our Science Camp, June next year and we would like to invite Prof Ewe and also other UTAR members to join our activities to grace the event together.”

The meeting ended with a group photography session and a souvenir presentation session. The visit concluded with a lab tour and a campus tour.

Previously, the teachers of Chong Hwa Independent High School have been visited UTAR Petaling Jaya Campus in the year 2014 and Kampar Campus in the year 2009.
