Mastering your destiny

The Centre for Extension Education (CEE) collaborated with Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement (MMLM) to organise a talk titled “Mastering Your Destiny” at Sungai Long Campus on 23 October 2018.

The invited speaker was Roy Tan, who has been an experienced speaker in public speaking since 2009. He has spoken to over 500 organisations of various size and industries and to over 10,000 people from various backgrounds. He is also actively involved in youth leadership and he currently works in an international non-governmental organisation called Junior Chamber International (JCL).

Roy sharing his own personal experience with participants

At the talk, Roy shared how he started his first job as a software engineer in a factory at Cyberjaya and explained how he slowly ventured into the oil and gas sector and subsequently into an IT solution firm in 2017. He made a big decision to shift his focus on developing his skills in the areas of personal development after he realised his potential in public speaking. “Change is a progress. According to the laws of nature, anything of nature must grow to their greatest potential. Human being is part of nature and should never stop growing. Therefore, whatever you do, don’t stop moving; keep learning and meet people to build new relationships and networks, and find a way to be a better person,” he said.

He also encouraged the participants to be respectful, bold and courageous and he provided them with some tips to overcome the fear of public speaking. “If you want to take an action that will eliminate fear, the thing you need to do is to be sure of the result,” he said. He further explained, “The more knowledge, wisdom, experience and information you possess, the least uncertain you become; the lesser uncertainty you have, the more courageous you become to take action.” Besides, he advised participants to be always grateful and to continuously work on their strength. “Many of us are clear about our weaknesses, but we should take more time to think about our strength. This is because we have been often told to work on our weaknesses,” explained Roy. He stated that a person will lose their strength if they stop working on it. Furthermore, the talk also included some interactive activities such as pencil breaking to encourage the participants to get out of their seats and participate in the lesson.

The talk ended with an interactive Q&A session, followed by a souvenir presentation from CEE Senior Instructor-cum-English Unit Head Raiza Azni binti Suhainih to Roy.
