Strengthening the international cooperation in higher engineering education

The 13th International Conference on Science, Technology and Education Policy was held at Hangzhou, China from 8 to 10 November 2018. Themed “Higher Engineering Education under the Belt and Road Initiative”, the conference aimed to enhance the exchange and cooperation in higher engineering education between the Belt and Road countries.

Present at the conference were academicians, researchers and industrialists from the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, Chinese Academy of Engineering, China Association of Higher Education, well-known engineering colleges and universities in China, renowned universities in countries along the B&R route as well as global enterprises.

The inauguration ceremony of International Alliance of Engineering Education for the Belt and Road was launched at the conference. Led by Zhejiang University (ZJU), it was jointly initiated by Beihang University (BUAA), Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), Chongqing University (CQU), Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU), Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU), University of Novi Sad, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), China Communications Construction Company Ltd. (CCCC), Aliyun University, Zhejiang Hengyi Group Company Ltd., Zhejiang Yalong Educational Equipment Joint-Stock Co., Ltd., and UTAR. 

Prof Ewe sharing his view on the tertiary engineering education

Delivering his speech at the conference, UTAR Vice President for Internationalisation and Academic Development Prof Ir Dr Ewe Hong Tat presented the challenges and opportunities of international cooperation in tertiary engineering education. He talked about the main trends driving change in engineering education and explained the requirements of Engineering programme in Malaysia. Prof Ewe also introduced UTAR and its international partners as well as UTAR’s projects, collaborations and activities such as Student Mobility Programmes, Cyber Classroom and Externship Programme.

In addition, some concerning issues were also discussed at the conference, namely the vision of international cooperation in higher engineering education and its opportunities, the key cooperation fields, engineering talent demands, talent mobility trends, talent training mode in B&R countries and the paths and practices of improving international students’ quality and talent training quality in B&R countries.

The three-day conference was hosted by Zhejiang University and Chinese Academy of Engineering. It was organised by Department of Engineering Management, Chinese Academy of Engineering; Education Committee, Chinese Academy of Engineering; Institute of China’s Science, Technology and Education Policy, Zhejiang University; and International Centre for Engineering Education under the auspices of UNESCO (ICEE), together with the co-organisers Chinese Society for Engineering Education and International College of Zhejiang University. It was also supported by Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education; Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Ministry of Education; China Association of Higher Education.
