Enriching young minds through writing

UTAR Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) and Odonata Publishing Sdn Bhd jointly organised a talk on the publishing industry of Chinese book in Malaysia and China on 23 November 2018 at Sungai Long Campus. Invited to deliver the talk was Odonata Publishing Sdn Bhd Director Khor Ewe Pin. He is also a famous novelist who greatly enriches the minds of readers especially young Chinese in Malaysia.

At his talk, Khor Ewe Pin explained the overview of the book printing and publishing industry in Malaysia. He pointed out the differences between Malaysia and China publishers and addressed the issues that are usually encountered by book printers and publishers due to trend changes in the market demand. He also talked about the background of Odonata Publishing Sdn Bhd and shared the story of how the company entered the China market and established good cooperative relationships with publishing companies in China.

The 8th Odonata Juvenile Novel Award Ceremony subsequently took place after the talk. This year’s award received a total of 75 entries. The preliminary review was done by the editor of Odonata Publishing Sdn Bhd; whereas the final review was done by professional and juvenile judges. The professional judges included Khor Ewe Pin, Author Dr Yulduz Emiloglu, Sam Yi Sen, Cheah Cher Hui, Editor Chia Shu Yi and ICS Department of Chinese Studies of Sungai Long Campus Head Assoc Prof Dr Liau Ping Leng. The juvenile judges, on the other hand, were students from Tsun Jin High School and SJK(C) Chung Wah, namely Tan Yin Tung, Chu Jingten, Kor Wei Jin, Lee Jia Lin, Koh Yu Chen, Tee Chen Khang and Eason Law.

A construction management graduand from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) Foo Kah Chun won the first runner-up for the 8th Odonata Juvenile Novel Award and took home RM10,000 and a trophy. He also officially became an author under Odonata Publishing Sdn Bhd and his award-winning novel “你的心跳牵动了世界” will be published this year on December. In addition, the event also saw the launch ceremony of the 9th Odonata Juvenile Novel Award. The ceremony was officiated by Odonata Publishing Sdn Bhd Trustee Lee Chee Peng, Khor Ewe Pin, General Manager Khor Shu Qi, Institute of Chinese Studies Dean Assoc Prof Dr Chong Siou Wei, Dr Liau and Cheah. To promote this award among the youth, Cheah was invited to be the ambassador award to encourage more novel writing for the competition.
