Developing research interest through FYP Poster Competition

UTAR Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology (FEGT) Final Year Project (FYP) Poster Competition was held for the eighth time on 23 August 2018 at Kampar Campus. It was jointly organised by FEGT and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Student Section Kampar Campus.

Present at the event were guests and judges, IEM Perak Branch members Ir Simon Yeong Chin Chow and Dr Mark Ovinis, Technologies Association of Malaysia (TAM) Vice President Ts Steven Shum Wai Koon, representatives from the local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) Gary Soh Chong Mun from Pak Keong Food Industries Sdn Bhd, Kong Junn Lun from Unimax, Caesar Nair from Kewpump (M) Sdn Bhd, Kenneth Wong from Kenep Resourses (Asia) Sdn Bhd, and FEGT Dean Assoc Prof Dr Yap Vooi Voon and faculty staff.

The competition aimed at providing students with a platform to showcase the outcome of their FYP, as well as to develop research interest among FEGT students. The competition also aimed to encourage and strengthen the industry linkage between local SMEs and FEGT that will make way for more collaborations in the future. With the sponsorship of IEM Perak Branch, the competition saw the entry of 110 posters from five departments of FEGT, namely the Departments of Construction Management, Electronic Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering and Petrochemical Engineering.

Among the entries, 15 best posters were firstly shortlisted, followed by the top five, and finally the top three as the winners, based on the evaluation by the IEM representatives. Emerging as the top three winners of the competition were Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Environmental Engineering student Ooi Joo Kheng, Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Electronic Engineering student Chow Chee Theng and Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Petrochemical Engineering student Chong Wei Tze.

Ooi won the first place with his winning poster titled “Evaluation of Photocatalytic Fuel Cell System for Simultaneous Treatment of Greywater and Electrical Power Generation”, while Chow won the second place with her poster titled "Biometric Personal Identification Based on Photoplethysmography (PPG) Signal by Heart Rate (Hardware)”. The third place winner was Chong with his winning poster titled “Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes and Textile Wastewater Over Hierarchical ZnO/WO3 Composites Under Fluorescent Light Irradiation”.

Securing the first place allowed Ooi to walk away with a cash prize of RM100, a medal, a certificate and a Challenge Trophy engraved with the winner’s name, while Chow and Chong took home a medal and a certificate each with a cash prize of RM50 and RM30 respectively. Other than the top three winners’ posters, other shortlisted posters were also awarded a medal and a certificate each by IEM Perak.
