It was a fun-filled learning visit for 28 UTAR students when they visited a number of New Villages in Kelantan. The visit lasted for three days from 12 to 14 April 2019. The visit aimed at improving students’ understanding of new villages, encouraging students to be broad-minded, developing their creativity and entrepreneurial skills and cultivating their teamwork.

The students commented that the visit benefitted them as they were able to practice their communication skills when interviewing the villagers of the new villages. The students also said that the visit was a good experience as they were able to learn in various outdoor settings, such as farm, plantations, temples and famous tourist spots.

The first day saw the students arriving at their first location; Tanah Merah. From there, they embarked on the journey of visiting the New Villages, namely Kampung Pasir Panji, Kampung Jelatok, Kampung Kelisar and Kampung Pulau Raya. On the second day, they visited more New Villages, namely Kampung Pasir Parit, Kampung Kasar, Kampung Tendong, Kampung Tamangan Baru, Kampung Chekok Tok Chuba, Kampung Joh and Kampung Mata Air. At these villages, the students conducted interviews with the local residents and explored the uniqueness of each village. The exploration included visiting the villages’ temples, plantations and other historical places. The visit to the villages’ historical places enabled the students to learn the background of each village, including how the villages were established. Some villages also had House of Wayang Kulit, a traditional performing art of puppet-shadow play that is said, by the residents, to be a skill that is rarely found among the current generation. Therefore, the opportunity to witness the wayang kulit performance was an eye-opening experience.

The final day of the trip saw the students visiting SJKC Yuk Cheng for New Village Community Services. The UTAR delegates were welcomed by the school Vice Principal Soon Sie Cheong. “We are very honoured to have students from UTAR organising English and STEM Learning Programme. The students of SJKC Yuk Cheng are very excited about the programme because it will improve their knowledge of science. Education is very important and we hope that the programme will bring positive changes to the lives of the students here,” said Soon.

Various interactive activities were organised, including “A General View of Agroecology”, “Math Equation Learning” and “English Learning”. The primary school students also had fun conducting an experiment on photosynthesis. They were also given an explanation on plants’ interactions with insects. There was also a small mathematics quiz which the primary school students had fun solving.

The visit ended on a good note when they visited three other New Villages in Pasir Puteh, namely Kampung Selising, Kampung Seligi and Kampung Semerak. The villages were majorly made up of Malay and Siam ethnicity. Hence, the students had the opportunity to learn about other cultures. Despite experiencing a slight culture shock, the students spoke of that visit at the three New Villages as a unique one.
