Enriching experiences through industrial visit

The Institute of Public Relations Malaysia Students Association – UTAR Chapter (IPRMSA – UTAR Chapter) organised industrial visits to Star Media Radio Group and MEASAT Broadcast Network Systems Sdn Bhd at Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur on 5 April 2019. The visits saw the participation of 41 students. They were accompanied by FAS lecturers, namely Diong Fong Wei, Ong Sheau Wen and Christina Ong Sook Beng.

The industrial visits aimed to educate the students about the broadcasting industry in Malaysia and provide them with new insights regarding the internal management of broadcasting companies. Besides, it also served as a platform for them to gain more knowledge through interactions with the experts in the broadcasting industry.

The visit to Star Media Radio Group was led by Corporate Communication Executive Woo Poi Yian. During the visit, Woo shared the practices of the job scope, the procedures and her experience in the broadcasting industry. She also mentioned that the disc jockeys (DJs) do not only focus on performing their jobs within the office areas but they also need to familiarise with other outdoor activities to fulfil the demand in the industry.

In addition, the students also visited one of their radio stations, 988 FM. According to Woo, Star Media Radio Group has different media channels that target different groups of audience in Malaysia; and 988 FM is one of the radio stations that targets the youth market. The students also had the chance to meet DJ Alsen Lee. He provided information about his job and the broadcasting process. He also shared how the broadcast services work in Malaysia.

The students then proceeded to MEASAT Broadcast Network Systems Sdn. Bhd, My FM to experience the working environment over there. Led by Associate Manager Lau Yu Hang, the students were given a quick visit around the administrative offices. The visitors were also briefed on the format of the workspace and job regulations. The visits enabled the students to understand the transformation that took place from traditional broadcasting to broadcasting in the digital era.

The Institute of Public Relations Malaysia Student Association (IPRMSA) was formed and supported by the ‘IPRM’ and Public Relations practitioners under one association. Bringing together students from both local and private colleges and universities who are interested in public relations is the main purpose of IPRMSA. The main objective of IPRMSA is to enhance the cooperation and collaboration among the public relations students, representing the student divisions of ‘IPRM’ known as IPRMSA.
