Increasing fire safety concern among community

UTAR Department of Safety and Security (DSS) of Sungai Long Campus organised an emergency response and fire safety awareness talk on 8 April 2019 at Sungai Long Campus.

Ben Ee sharing fire safety tips

The special speaker who was invited to deliver the talk was Ben Ee, a Senior Trainer from FPC Prevention Service Sdn Bhd. In the talk, he first explained the characteristics and components of fire by presenting a simple model to the participants. He then shared the different types of fire and explained that the most dangerous one was the electrical fire. “Fires that are most likely to happen between midnight and 6 in the morning are also extremely dangerous,” he said.

He educated the participants to identify the different types of fire extinguisher and taught them the ways to use them appropriately. He also shared the PASS technique to use a fire extinguisher and guided the participants on how to check its effectiveness. “A fire extinguisher is functional if the needle falls within the green area. It should be replaced or recharged if the needle is in the red zone,” he said. He also added, “To prevent fire extinguishers from being rusted, they are normally installed on a wall.”

Moreover, he presented the basic equipment that should be kept in a car, including first aid kit, torchlight, jump start cable, scissors, glass breaker, power bank and a portable fire extinguisher. He also introduced a multi-functional safety device called Escapetor Plus, which is capable of generating mechanical power, flashing alarm and LED lighting, cutting safety belt and many others. Furthermore, he provided some guidelines for emergency action in handling gas leaking and said, “If there is any incident of gas leaking, do not turn on or off any switches as this could cause an explosion.” He also explained that gas was originally odourless. “In order for people to sniff out potentially dangerous gas leaks, chemical smell had to be added,” he said.

According to him, smoke was the primary cause of death for victims of fire. He explained that smoke spreads level to level in seconds and that the release of toxic smoke can kill more people than the fire. He also shared some tips on how to escape fire from a high-rise building as well as from a trapped vehicle. He also shared alternative emergency contact, saying that dialling the number 112 on a mobile phone will get through to emergency services even if there is no signal available.
