Secondary school students explore world cultures

All smiles for participants

It was a world of discovery for the participants at “Explore the World, Explore the Cultures” event organised by UTAR Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC) Kampar on 4 August 2018 at SJK(C) Ying Sing, Malim Nawar.

Present at the event was DSSC Kampar Head Hee Chwen Yee representing UTAR Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, Deputy Headmistress of SJK(C) Ying Sing Chai Lai Ping representing Headmistress Chen Siang Chen, Deputy Headmaster of SJK(C) Ying Sing Kong Weng Hoe, Organising Chairperson Aki Umehara, staff and participants.

The event, which attracted over 100 participants, aimed to cultivate community spirit among its participants by engaging them in community volunteer services. It fostered a culture of team spirit among participants through team-based activities and enhanced participants’ English proficiency through English school-related activities. DSSC believed that the event will not only bridge but also strengthen the relationship between the University and the local community.

“On behalf of the school, I would like to thank UTAR for organising this insightful event. This is an important event for our school students because it increases their knowledge about the global world. It is also from such events that our school students are able to learn teamwork when they work together to solve problems and overcome challenges from the activities prepared. I am glad that our school students will not only have an entertaining and educational day, but they will also be able to experience cultural diversity and learn about the different cultures from all around the world. More significantly, our school students will be able to practice their English, thus improving their proficiency and be more comfortable with the English language,” said Chai.

“I am very delighted to see such strong support from the participants. As an intern in UTAR, I experienced first-hand the wonders of cultural diversity in Malaysia and in UTAR itself. The experience I gained and the new things I learnt from different cultures are truly remarkable. Therefore, it is my hope that participants are able to experience the same through this event. I am grateful to be given this opportunity to create such an event for the participants and to make this event a platform for the younger generation to learn about various cultures,” enthused Umehara.

She added, “Apart from educating participants about the various cultures, the event creates a good synergy between the University and the community to move forward. UTAR students who participate in this volunteering work also benefit by gaining a better understanding about the community and cultivate humility and compassion. We look forward to organising more cultural activities to benefit students and the community.”
