The Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM) organised a talk titled “Prof Kim Fam’s talk” on 5 August 2019 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus.

Present at the event were FAM Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Dr Foo Meow Yee, Department of International Business Head Farah Waheeda binti Jalaludin, PhD and MPhil Programmes Head Dr Cham Tat Huei, students and staff.
The speaker, Prof Kim-Shyan Fam is the Founding Director of MAG Scholar, Professor of Marketing at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand and Chair Professor of Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, China. The two-hour talk saw Prof Kim sharing information about his journey in the area of publication as well as Chopstick marketing.
“If you are a student, learn something about research and relationships. I would encourage all of you to do research,” he said. “You need to start from the top every day and if you can understand when you read back, there are chances that your paper will get published,” he continued.
Moreover, he shared his experience on how he started, struggled and achieved from the year 1993 till this day. He also said that he had to wait for six years to get his paper published and shared on how he grew in his journey from 1 researcher to 35 researchers today. “You must always enjoy what you do. Find the balance between teaching, research, and your work life. A healthy researcher makes a good educator,” he said. A short Q&A session was held before he proceeded to the Chopstick marketing talk.
He showed some pictures and explained how some things are acceptable and unacceptable in different countries and cultures in terms of Chopstick marketing. Following that, he shared the collection of his personal pictures, all taken while attending conferences overseas. The pictures showed different cultures of the respective countries as well. He then shared MAG Scholar’s objectives and how they are trying to get published by the top professors in the next three years.

“Good luck and all the best to everyone. Start something even though you’re starting small. Talk to people, find ways and opportunities. Also, talk to yourself because if you don’t, you won’t grow,” he advised.
The talk ensued with a Q&A session and ended with the presentation of souvenir from Dr Foo to Prof Kim.
