Hair donation campaign instils empathy

The Community Service Society (CSS) of UTAR Kampar Campus organised an event titled “C.U.T. for Kids- Hair Donation Campaign”at Tin Village Mall, Kampar from 3 to 4 August 2019.

Besides raising awareness on the plight and needs of young cancer patients children, the event also aimed to nurture kindness, compassion, and empathy among the students.

As hair loss is one of the most common and unfavourable side effects that most cancer patients face when undergoing chemotherapy procedure, this would often place them in a position where they would need wigs. However, genuine wigs sold in the market are pricey due to the complex manufacturing process and scarcity in the market. Therefore, the campaign held a hair donation drive to help the children regain their confidence. The hair donated by the public were collected by the organisers and turned it into wigs.

“The cancer treatment and its side effect can be challenging for the children. They would begin to see themselves differently and that would be disheartening. Hence, we hope this event could help people understand the suffering of young cancer patients,” said Organising Chairperson Lee Yong Yin during the campaign launch, adding that the fund collected throughout the campaign will be donated to the Locks of Hope Association.

Department of Student Affairs (Kampar Campus) Assistant Manager Ma Foong Mei said, “I am grateful for the committee’s sincerity and effort in organising this campaign. It gives opportunity to the younger generation to embrace the community with kindness and compassion. I hope the students will carry on with this initiative and spirit to bring hope and smile to the cancer patients.” Ma also hoped that this event will be organised again in the future.

One of the hair donation participants, Chai Sze Wha added, “This is a very powerful event to advocate cancer awareness and encourage the public to donate their hair for a good purpose. After donating my hair, I feel like I could relate better with the patients and have more empathy as well as love towards those around me.”

The two-day campaign also offered hair cutting service at RM5 for male and RM10 for female, which is also an alternative for those who wish to contribute monetarily other than hair donation.

The Locks of Hope Association is brought to Malaysians by MMIS Professional to serve as a platform for Malaysians to donate their hair, which will be turned into wigs for cancer patients that undergo chemotherapy. The association has been involved in numerous hair donation drives with universities, colleges, schools and the public as well.
