Awakening the Lions and Dragon

The UTAR Wushu Club held the lions and dragon eye-dotting ceremony on 1 August 2019 at Sungai Long Campus. Two gold lions, one blue lion and one dragon were given the awakening ritual during the ceremony.

According to popular belief, dotting the eyes of the lion and dragon signifies the awakening of the lion and the dragon. Guided by Master Yap and Master Fun, the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, leg, forehead and the rest of the lion and dragon were dotted to empower the lion to fulfil its duty of bringing about protection, good luck, health and prosperity to those present. The ceremony aimed to spread the awareness of Chinese culture and tradition as well as to usher in prosperity and happiness to the community.

Present at the event were UTAR Chancellor Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, Toh Puan Ena Ling, President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, Founder of Malaysia Xuan Long dragon and Lion Sports Association Master Andrew Yap, UTAR Wushu Club Lion Dance Troupe Coach and Hong Wei Dragon and Lion Dance Team Master Fun Yoke Keong, Division of Corporate Communications and Public Relation Director Ong Soo Weon, Tew Chin Yan, students and staff.

Three lion dance troupes known as the Malaysian Xuan Long Dragon and Lion Sports Association, Hong Wei Dragon and Lion Dance Team, and TAR UC Lion Dance were also present at the ceremony to enliven the atmosphere.

Prof Chuah speaking about the importance of Chinese culture and traditions

Prof Chuah said, “I am proud of the UTAR Wushu Club members for your dedication and contribution towards UTAR. I know how difficult it is to organise an event and to seek for sponsorship but this event will train you to become a better person. I am thankful that the UTAR Wushu Club is taking an initiative to promote the Chinese culture and tradition while showing their performances to the local community. I hope the UTAR Wushu Club will bring joy to the Sungai Long community as they usher in good luck, good blessing and prosperity.”

Marvin Yeo welcoming the guests

Organising Chairperson Marvin Yeo Ken Yao said, “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the sponsors for their kind support towards our lion and dragon dance troupe. This event is truly colourful and memorable with the support from everyone. The lion dance tradition is very much part of the Chinese culture especially during auspicious occasions and it symbolises good luck, prosperity and happiness. The Wushu Club members aim to put keep this culture and tradition alive and preserve the art of lion dance performance. With the guidance from our coach Master Andrew Yap, we will put in more effort and train tirelessly to give the best performance to the public and to join competitions to achieve greatness.”

The event was followed by several performances such as diabolo, wushu, Chinese orchestra, 24 festive drum and traditional lion dance.
