Increasing public awareness and knowledge on cyber safety

Cybersafe Awareness Talk was held on 26 July 2019 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. The talk was organised by the Department of Science and Engineering parked under the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Sungai Long Campus.

The talk titled “Current Cyber Threats in Malaysia and Best Practices” was given by three CFS lecturers, namely Yeoh Li-Cheng, Mok Ru Kai and Ling Kock Sheng. The objective of the talk was to expose staff and students to cyber threats and cyber law in Malaysia and instil the awareness of creating safe cyberspace.

The first speaker Yeoh shared information on theft and hacking, one that occurs generally in the cyber world. She spoke about cyberethics such as cyberbullying and the use of tracking apps among parents to track their children.

The second speaker Mok gave a short briefing on cyber copyright. He shared images that can be used for non-commercial purpose on Google and introduced the differences between phishing and pharming. He also gave some real-life examples of victims who fell prey into such situations.

A piece of information is no longer privacy when it is posted on social media since it involves sharing. He also advised everyone to create passwords that are not easy for others to figure out; he advised against using names, birth dates, account numbers, or telephone numbers as the password. The talk continued with him showing the worldwide statistics of people using Whatsapp, Facebook and Instagram. He then provided a link to check the existence of fake accounts or companies. He also gave a thorough explanation on privacy, the principles of cyber safety and key elements of cybersecurity.
