Gaining insights into learning organisation

A talk titled “The Secret of China’s Rise—The Learning Organization” was organised by UTAR Centre for Extension Education (CEE) in collaboration with UTAR Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC) and Quantum Dynamic Human Development PLT at Sungai Long Campus on 29 July 2019.

The talk was delivered by Shanghai Mingde Learning Organization Institute Director Zhang Sheng Xiong. During his talk, he talked about the concept of a learning organisation and explained how important it is to create a learning economy and society. He presented statements from a Nobel laureate in economics Professor Joseph Stiglitz, explaining how the creation of a “learning society” can contribute to the country’s development and advancement.

“Learning power is the core driving force of economic development,” he said. He added, “The larger fish no longer devours the smaller ones. The situation has changed. Now the fast fish eats the slow fish.” He stated that the basic unit of learning should be an organisation, not just an individual.

Highlighting the importance of learning as the basis of sustained growth and development, he mentioned that the advancement of network undoubtedly provides a broader learning opportunity for learners, regardless of age. He also said, “Knowledge is power. But this power will only come from learning ability.”

Moreover, he explained the five disciplines of a learning organisation, which included personal mastery, improving mental models, building a shared vision, team learning and system thinking. According to him, personal mastery refers to self-realisation that breaks through the limits; improving mental models refers to turning the mirror to oneself for the cultivation of mental models; building shared vision refers to a sense of shared purpose among organisational members; team learning refers to collective learning and systematic thinking refers to the integration of other cultivation into one.

He also shared the secret of china’s success and presented the role of learning in creating a knowledgeable community. He believed that lifelong learning would be increasingly crucial in the upcoming 30 years and the needs of technology knowledge would also be increasing 100 times from the current level. The talk ended with a presentation of a token of appreciation from the Success Inspirer of Quantum Dynamic Human Development Ng Thian Watt to Zhang.
