MoA with CRSE

A memorandum of agreement (MoA) was exchanged between UTAR and Colas Rail System Engineering (CRSE) Sdn Bhd on 14 January 2019 at Sungai Long Campus to signify the collaboration between the two parties.

Present at the exchange ceremony were Pestech International Bhd Chief Executive Officer Paul Lim, Corporate Communication Manager Phoebe Lim, HR Manager Rosmeyuzai and ICP Executive Nor Amira. Representing UTAR were its Vice President for R&D and Commercialisation Prof Ts Dr Faidz Abdul Rahman, Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Dean Prof Ir Dr Goi Bok Min, LKC FES Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes  Assoc Prof Ts Dr Yap Wun She, Assoc Prof Ts Dr Chew Kuew Wai, Assoc Prof Ts Dr Stella Morris, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Head Assoc Prof Ir Dr Chang Yoong Choon, Centre for Power Systems and Electricity Chairperson Prof Ir Dr Lim Yun Seng, Division of Community and International Networking Director Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn, Dr Chua Kein Huat, Dr Lim Boon Han, UTAR postgraduate student Soon Kok Yew and Tan Zhi Hao.

The MoA aimed to provide a platform for the parties to work together closely on a research project called “Research in Railway Power Supply and Distribution Systems” which studies the power adequacy and power quality of MRT2 power supply and distribution systems.

In his address at the signing ceremony, Prof Faidz said, “I believe the power system and modelling simulation lab has been set up in UTAR so that the R&D work and also training of students and industry can be done in UTAR. UTAR has always believed that the university and the industry should forge closer ties to drive innovation among students, lecturers and industry players as the industry knows best on what is needed. Thus, this collaboration with the industry will allow the academics and students to gain knowledge and be informed of the latest technology which is relevant to the industry.”

Paul Lim said, “I would like to congratulate UTAR for being selected as the participant of Industrial Collaboration Programme (ICP) for the MRT2 power supply and distribution system. This programme promotes the localisation of technology, human capital development in the high technology area, research and development and collaboration with Malaysia higher learning institute. The overall goal is to nurture the know-how in the Malaysia rail sector to move towards self-sufficiency and long term sustainability of the sector. This is an effort by the Malaysian for the Malaysian initiative to reduce dependency on foreign product and services.”

After the exchange ceremony, Dr Chua presented the updates on the research progress. He said, “Our vision is to aspire to become a distinguished training and consultancy resource centre for Railway Industry in South East Asia and our mission is to develop talents through pre-eminence in applying knowledge and developing competencies in the railway industry and to provide comprehensive training and consultancy for the railway industry.” He added, “To date, the laboratory, equipped with 20 computers and ETAP ETrax Educational License, is set up to conduct trainings related to railway power supply and distribution system.”

Tan presented a research study titled, “Research on Railway Power Supply System” and its background which focuses on the power adequacy study of MRT2 and One line diagram modelling of MRT2. He said, “The objective of this research is to investigate the power adequacy and power quality of MRT2 power supply system using ETAP and eTraX software.”

Prof Lim shared another research titled, “Grid-Integrated Energy Storage System for Providing Clean, Cheap and Reliable Electricity to Developing Nations under Growth of Renewable Energy” and spoke about existing and old power system network, benefits of Grid-Integrated Energy Storage System as well as the objective of the Grid-Integrated Energy Storage Project.

The event was followed by a discussion over refreshments before it adjourned.
