TCM in Malaysia Book Launch

UTAR Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) Department of Chinese Medicine organised a book launch on 18 July 2019 at Sungai Long Campus.

The title of the book was “Traditional Chinese Medicine in Malaysia”«=马来西亚中医药现况». It was one of the collaboration results from China-Malaysia Centre for Traditional Chinese Medicine (CMCTCM), an integrative platform combined with medicine, healthcare, education, scientific research, cultural exchange and industry of traditional Chinese medicine established by UTAR and Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine (GXUCM). The main editors for the book were Centre for Research in Traditional Chinese Medicine Chairperson-cum-Department of Chinese Medicine Head Assoc Prof Dr Te Kian Keong and GXUCM Assoc Prof Wu Liangbing.

Present at this momentous occasion were UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, Dr Te, Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) Council Secretariat of Traditional and Complementary Medicine Dr Dyanan Puvanandran, MOH Traditional and Complementary Medicine Division Senior Principal Assistant Director Dr Chai Koh Meow, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) School of Traditional Chinese Medicine Dean Prof Linchao Qian, National Cancer Institute (NCI), Head of Traditional and Complementary Medicine Unit Dr Teo Chiah Shean, Federation of Chinese Physicians and Medicine-Dealers Association of Malaysia (FCPMDAM) Secretary-General Choo Teik Liang, Federation of Chinese Physicians and Acupuncturists Association of Malaysia (FCPAAM) Secretary-General Dr Ng Po Min, and Tung Shin Hospital Chinese Medicine Division Deputy Superintendent Huang Ching Hui.

The book launch also saw the participation of representatives from organisations such as Malaysian Chinese Medical Association, Hai-O Enterprise Berhad, Tung Shin Hospital, Tong Ren Tang, Ban Kah Chai, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Eu Yan Sang, and Hing Onn Sdn Bhd.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof Chuah mentioned that UTAR has been working in close cooperation with GXUCM since 2011. He hopes that both institutions will continue to work closely to foster broader, deeper and more multi-faceted collaboration for mutual benefits.

He also stressed on the significance of “Traditional Chinese Medicine in Malaysia”, saying that the book will help people to better understand the development of traditional Chinese medicine in Malaysia and promote its related activities. He also mentioned that UTAR has embarked on the plan to set up a specialist training hospital which is located at its Kampar Campus in Perak and the hospital will provide a combination of conventional, traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic treatments. Among the traditional Chinese medicine treatments are acupuncture, tui-na, internal medicine, gynaecology, paediatrics, dermatology, oncology, otolaryngology, rehabilitation and inpatient services.

Dr Te, on the other hand, said that the University presently has more than 100 Chinese medicine graduates. According to him, the employment rate for UTAR Chinese medicine students has remained above 90 percent within six months of graduation and with a growth of average salary.  He pointed out that GXUCM is one of UTAR's earliest partners, and he hoped to strengthen the existing cooperation activities particularly in the area of traditional Chinese medicine treatment and scientific research.

He also cordially invited attendees to participate in the 9th International Conference on Traditional and Complementary Medicine (INTRACOM) which will be held at One World Hotel from 3 August 2019 to 5 August 2019. The theme of the conference is ‘Integrated Approach towards Healthy Ageing’, and it is a joint effort of UTAR and the Ministry of Health Malaysia.
