Innovation competition promotes green building concepts

UTAR Engineering Society, in collaboration with GreenRe Shd Bhd, organised “My Green Space-Green Building Innovation Competition” on 28 June 2019 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. This inter-university competition was held in conjunction with the Engineering and Science Fiesta 2019 (ESF 2019), with the aim to encourage creativity and innovation in researching sustainable energy usage, as well as to enhance soft skills among the participants.

The opening ceremony of the competition saw the attendance of LKC FES Student Development and Industrial Training Deputy Dean Ir Dr Lim Jee Hock, Division of Community and International Networking Director Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn, UTAR Engineering Society Advisor Dr Tham Mau Luen, Event Chairperson Yew Sze Yen, judges, lecturers and participants. The judges for the competition were Assistant Manager of GreenRE Sdn Bhd Nur Fateha binti Jameluddin, Business development Manager of Blue Snow Energy Eunice Chong Lee Han and UTAR Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology lecturer Dr Shalini Sanmargaraja.

At the opening ceremony, Dr Lim welcomed all the participants to the competition and expressed his appreciation for all the support given to make the competition successful. “I am proud to see many students from UTAR and other universities joining this event actively as they are required to brainstorm for ideas on how they could improve the efficiency of energy usage in a house in different ways,” he said. He said that the competition would be an eye-opener for the participants to learn professional knowledge and soft skills.

Also, present to deliver a speech at the ceremony was Yew. She said, “My Green Space-Green Building Innovation Competition” was organised for the first time in UTAR with the ideas to promote green technologies, renewable energies and the importance of protecting the Earth while providing the essential of livings to human beings. “It was a wonderful experience for me to observe the upgrowing of this event from zero to what we have now. I hope all of you can enjoy this competition,” she said.

A total of nine teams participated in the competition. Among the participated universities were UTAR, UCSI University and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP). They were required to design and build a model and present the overall idea of their creation. The list of winners is as follows:

 “We feel very excited right now and we did not expect to achieve this. Our concept was based on Malaysia’s climate and environment so that we as Malaysians can have a better environment in the future. We came across a lot of new ideas and techniques which we would have not learned if we had not joined this competition,” said Leong Wai Lun, from the champion team. He added, “Teammates from different backgrounds with different knowledge is the secret to our success.”

Dr Tham hopes that the participants would learn something from the competition

Dr Tham was invited to deliver a closing speech for the competition. In his remarks, he said, “As the advisor of this competition, I do hope that all of you have learned something, especially on the importance of having green technologies in the current era. The time you used for this competition will not be wasted.” He also thanked all the participants for taking part in the competition and thanked the committee for their effort in preparing for the event since last year August.
