Bachelor of Communication (Hons) Public Relations (PR) students from the Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS) organised an In-Campus Mural Painting at UTAR Kampar Campus. The event was part of PR’s UAMP3084 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) subject. An official ceremony was held on 13 March 2019.
Present at the ceremony were UTAR President Ir Prof Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, Head of Estates and Facilities Department of Kampar Campus (DEF) Ir Abdul Majid bin Mohd Gani, Yu Jing Art Studio Artist Sophie Ng Min Hui, FAS Department of Public Relations lecturer Diong Fong Wei, staff and students.
At the ceremony, Prof Chuah highlighted the importance of the six pillars of education, namely Sociality, Physical and Health, Creativity, Knowledge, Virtual and Aesthetics. In addition, he also emphasised the importance of the leadership and volunteerism qualities among the students. He said, “Through projects like this, students are being cultivated with the aspect of leadership and volunteerism. It requires the students to make decisions and communicate with different parties, while undertaking the initiative of performing a task independently. These students who took the initiative to beautify the Campus will definitely have a good memory to take along with them.”
The Project Director of PR CSR Projects 2019, Group 7, Lim Xin Jie said, “The concept of the maze in the middle of the mural coincides with three UTAR missions, which are ‘Tenacity in overcoming challenges’, ‘Agility in facing new frontiers’, and ‘Responsibility in pursuit of excellence’. All the struggles, happiness and challenges faced by the university students throughout their undergraduate years are also reflected in this maze.” She also said that the process of initiating the CSR project has made her team realise the importance of CSR in the education system. It elevates the awareness of environmental and social issues, ultimately motivating the students to do their part to bring joy to people in the community. She hopes this mural could elevate the students’ determination and confidence to complete their studies.
According to Lim, the mural painting, which is about 20.3m in width and 2.5m in height, took one week to complete under the guidance and assistance of Ng. The murals are mainly located at the bridge between the FEGT Building and Administrative Building. The main objective of the project was to create an innovative and motivational environment for UTAR students. Apart from that, the students also hoped to engage with the UTAR community through an educational programme by involving the participation of key stakeholders.
