Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) final year students and UTAR industry partners had a fruitful opportunity to learn about each other during the LKC FES Final Year Project (FYP) Poster Competition & Industry Interaction Day on 17 April 2019 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus.
The biannual competition saw a total of 140 FYP posters showcased, with Architecture and Actuarial students participating for the first time. The final year projects were shortlisted from more than 600 entries to 140 and were categorised into 12 categories, namely green technology; sustainable development; sustainable development - energy and intelligence management; engineering social sciences; project management; theoretical/experimental sciences; applied mathematics, process automation and simulation; applied engineering; industrial case study; architecture building design, software design and prototypes; and applied engineering with prototypes. With only 10 minutes allocated, the participants were required to impress the judges with their projects as well as presentation skills for a chance to win cash prizes worth RM4,000.
The sponsors, comprised of UTAR industrial partners, also jazzed up the day with kiosks that offered recruitment and inquiry opportunities. The sponsors were Daikin Electronic Devices Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Honeywell Engineering Sdn Bhd, MCM eCom Global Venture Sdn Bhd, Mitsubishi Elevator Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Panasonic Appliances Air-Conditioning R&D Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Sanjung Khas Sdn Bhd, Sun Life Malaysia Assurance Berhad, Top Glove Sdn Bhd, Unit Concept Sdn Bhd, Acre Works Sdn Bhd, Atelier Alan Teh Architect, BBR Construction Systems (M) Sdn Bhd, CPCG Holdings Sdn Bhd, Didian Sdn Bhd, Duriane Professionals Sdn Bhd, Evol Consultancy, Ezen Packaging Sdn Bhd, Finexus Sdn Bhd, Ipsos Sdn Bhd, JKS Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd, LPT Construction Sdn Bhd, O2 Design Atelier, Pang Lian Kiow Agency, Perunding P.L.A., Soft-Skills Sdn Bhd, Stratos Consulting Group Sdn Bhd, Surbana International Consultants (M) Sdn Bhd, TCS Construction Sdn Bhd, Whale Cloud Technology Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Experian Malaysia Sdn Bhd.
“We invited the industry to set-up booths to promote two-way interaction. The industry will get the chance to know what our students are working on, while at the same time, the students get to know what is in demand and required by the industry,” said LKC FES Dean Prof Ir Dr Goi Bok Min in his closing speech. He also mentioned that the competition saw a positive growth from four tracks in 2016 to twelve tracks this year, including two tracks that required demonstrations.
In between the event, a sharing session by Department of Alumni Relations and Placement (DARP) was held to promote alumni activities. The session was followed by a series of talks promoting the postgraduate programmes by Head of Programme of Master of Environmental Technology and Master of Sustainable Construction Management Dr Tan Kok Weng, Head of Programme of Master of Architecture Ar Quake Huay Tin, Head of Programme of Master of Information Systems Dr Wong Whee Yen, Head of Programme of Master of Engineering (Mechanical) Ts Dr Yeo Wei Hong, and Head of Programme of PhD(Engineering) & Master of Engineering Science programmes Dr Ng Yee Sern.

Top Glove Senior Manager of Human Resource Ng Mei Fong was contented with the opportunity provided by LKC FES, “We were able to see the top-notch students that were selected by the faculty through their projects. As we were walking around, we were totally blown away. It is amazing to see how they were able to pull off these ideas in their projects and explain evidently the outcome and results of their final year projects.”
The world largest glove manufacturer company is also looking forward to potential graduates to join the multinational company. “We would love to have more graduates joining us. We hire more than a thousand graduates each year and this year we are planning to recruit 1,000 interns. We definitely have a lot of placements for UTAR students,” she added.
Ng Mei Fong (middle) listed down competency, attitude and discipline as the top three qualities that a graduate should possess
The posters were assessed by both internal and external judges from the faculty and industry alike. In order to win the judges’ hearts, the participants were expected to engage with the judges through a good presentation, narration and answering questions as well as being clear and concise on their projects. The posters were evaluated based on appearance, content and presentation.

Chung Pei Si had an unexpected first place win for Track 2: Sustainable Development. The 24 years old chemical engineering student’s research highlighted the performance of modified waste ground coffee in absorbing heavy metals that are often discharged by factories. Chung said, “I presented my research in a clear and simple way by reducing the scientific terms and jargons that may not be understood by people.” She also thanked her supervisor, Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn for encouraging her to participate in the competition.
“You should know your content. Other than that, you should be confident when you speak. While studying, I also do part-time tuition in Mathematics and Additional Mathematics. Handling the students really helped me boost my confidence. Practising in front of a mirror also helps,” advised first place winner for Track 1: Green Technology Lee Jin Sheng. Also a final year student, Lee’s research aimed to improve water-based intumescent coating to compete with solvent-based coating. While both aim to help protect structures against fire, the water-based intumescent coating is less hazardous to health compared to the solvent-based coating that is widely offered in the market.
