UTAR engages its students in CSR project

A group of 25 Public Relations (PR) students from the Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS) of UTAR, who is taking the course UAMP 3084 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), visited Precious Gift Orphanage Society on 10 March 2019 and brought joy to 16 children.

With the aim to beautify the environment of the orphanage and improve the orphan’s English proficiency through educational activities, the project was executed under the supervision and guidance of the Project Advisor-cum-FAS lecturer Diong Fong Wei.

Project Director Chong Jin Ming mentioned that through this CSR project, all the volunteers will have a clearer idea of CSR. They will also be able to give a positive impact to the society through their effort.

“CSR is an activity that brings awareness to the public. I hope this kind of act would contribute to creating a better world. We are not only executing a CSR project but also building a commitment towards the society,” said Chong.

She also explained that the orphanage was chosen because it was located in a suburban area, further away from the town where it receives less attention from the public.

The person in charge of Precious Gift Home, Leena mentioned that the overall project was good and it truly benefitted the orphans. Moreover, she also expressed her appreciation to UTAR students who had taken the initiative to spend time with the orphans and bring joy to them.

“I felt happy and had lots of fun throughout the sessions, especially during the role-play session, as I get to practice speaking English and I get to learn how to fold a butterfly through the origami session,” expressed Joel, one of the orphans in the Precious Gift Orphanage Home.

One of the volunteers, Nyam Kai Hui said that the event was a success and that she was glad to be able to participate in this CSR project to help the orphans in need.

Similar to this project, two more groups visited Rumah Sejahtera Gopeng and Pertubuhan Kebajikan Harapan Baru, Ipoh on 8 March 2019 and 10 March 2019 respectively. The two groups consisted of 30 and 13 PR students respectively.

Besides encouraging students to be volunteers, spreading love and helping vulnerable groups, the project held in Gopeng also aimed to encourage young university students to learn how to contribute to the society on behalf of their organisation.

To cheer the old folks, UTAR students prepared and sang a few evergreen English and Malay songs.  The students also sang “Glorious Years” and The Moon Represents My Heart” together for the elderlies. The elderlies joined them and sang happily. Besides, there was a cello performance by Khong Lu Jian from Fortissimo School of Music.

Lam Yanni, the chairman of the project said, “I hope that this event will bring a little warmth and joy to the elderlies.” The secretary of Rumah Sejahtera Gopeng said, “The elders have lived in this old folk home for a long time. Apart from chatting with friends here, the elders want to interact and communicate with the outside world because they are not exposed to the outside world.”  One of the elderlies said, “Some community organisation visited their home during the Lunar New Year and offered some supplies, but most of them left immediately after they put down their supplies.”

After the event, Wong Kit Lin, the chairman of Rumah Sejahtera Gopeng said, “I am so thankful to UTAR students for coming. I hope these young people will continue to have a kind and warm heart.” He also encouraged the students to study hard and contribute back to society in the future.

Last but not least, the group of 13 PR students visited Pertubuhan Kebajikan Harapan Baru, Ipoh to help beautify the surroundings of the orphanage and also to provide guidance for the children’s education. The group also carried out some activities such as painting the stair handrail and fences, planting session with the children, cleaning up the garden and so on. Besides, the activity also involved a total of 25 students along with the help of six volunteers from the community, 21 children and the person in charge from the orphanage.

In the closing ceremony, Project Director Yap Yu Xuan handed in a total of RM300 to Tham, the person in charge of the orphanage. The collection was a result of their fundraising activity. “People who are willing to show a random act of kindness are the people whom society needs the most,” said Tham, who is also Chief Financial Executive of Pertubuhan Kebajikan Harapan Baru, Ipoh. “We hope that this activity will continue to inspire more to help those who are in need,” he added.

The CSR Projects were carried out under the fundamental of continuous assessment in the course UAMP3084 Corporate Social Responsibility. A total of 102 students was involved in the project. They were divided into eight groups and each group carried out different CSR Projects which included beautification project and visitation to old folks and orphanage homes.
