UTAR Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Sungai Long Campus brought mathematics and science to the table for the visitors to enjoy at Mathematics and Science Fair 2019 (MSF 2019) on 3 October 2019.
With the aim to provide exposure to fellow students on STEM knowledge, the fair had science stream students putting up more than ten stations that included games, simple experiments and exhibition to offer visitors a fun hands-on experience while gaining new knowledge.
“Not every student gets this kind of exposure, especially the art stream students as they rarely get an opportunity to conduct such experiments. It is also fun for students to join. More importantly, we are stimulating interest in STEM which is aligned with the needs of our education system. Only 20 per cent of students in Malaysia are involved in the STEM field, so we need to do more activities to encourage participation and interest in STEM. We also want to portray science in interesting way unlike how they are introduced in the classrooms,” said Lecturer Yeoh Li-Cheng.
Biology station:
visitors get a chance to see water bears (Tardigrades) and other
microscopic organisms that live in mosses
One of the experiments held to check the Vitamin C content in commercial drinks as compared to natural sources like fruits
Visitors get to make
their own bath bomb from scratch at the Chemistry workshop
Launching balloon
rockets at the Physics station
With a simple circuit, colourful LED lights made pictures more interesting
Tower of Hanoi, a type of puzzle that requires great observation and problem-solving skills
Visitors taking up
the challenge to solve Binary Puzzle and Sudoku
MSF 2019 also offered coding classes, conducted by CFS lecturer Ling Kock Sheng (in light blue), for those who were interested
Also available during
the MSF 2019
was an experiment station that explained
oxidation and anti-oxidation, water purification through soil, myths
about chewing gums, creating mathematic equation, and many more.
Making MSF 2019 more interesting was competitions, namely MF2 Maths for Fun 3.0 Competition 2019 and Phyton File Handling Competition which saw the participation of more than 100 students from UTAR.
