Peer Helpers Study Tour 2019: Experiencing the meaning of life
UTAR Department of Student Affairs (DSA) Peer Helping Programme organised a study tour to National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences (NTUNHS), Taiwan from 29 September 2019 to 6 October 2019. A total of 25 students from both UTAR Sungai Long Campus and Kampar Campus participated in the study trip. The main goal of the study tour was to provide students with a better understanding of grief and loss, and learn the ways to improve their psychological health.
The study tour gave students the opportunity to interact with international students so as to know more about their culture and lifestyle in their country, and at the same time to gain new knowledge. The students also attended a grief-healing card workshop where they learnt how to use cards to accompany and comfort a person who is grieving.
Furthermore, students had the opportunity to know their estimated life span by answering a risk assessment questionnaire about life and death in the workshop. The workshop also provided them the insights into the concept of human death. Besides, students were able to learn about mindfulness which gave emphasis on living in the present. The main objective of this particular workshop was to expose students to mindfulness exercise and mindfulness treatment concepts. Students were also able to experience art therapy, which was a suitable therapy for people who cannot express their feelings and thoughts verbally. Art therapy allows people to express their inner feelings more comfortably. Overall, the study tour had given the students a good opportunity to gain new knowledge which can be applied in their studies and daily lives.
