Exploring potential collaboration with Tsinghua University

A group of delegates from Tsinghua University, China, visited UTAR Sungai Long Campus on 6 September 2019. The delegates consisted of Belt and Road Institute of Tsinghua University Executive Dean Prof Shi Zhiqin, Academic Committee Chairman Prof Chen Qi, Tsinghua University’s School of Social Sciences Prof Zhang Chenggang and Dr You Nan. They were accompanied by Malaysia Belt and Road Strategy Council Chairman Dr Chong Tien Siong.

Welcoming them on behalf of UTAR were its President Ir Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat, Belt and Road Strategic Research Centre Chairperson-cum-Institute of Management and Leadership Development Director Prof Dr Cheng Ming Yu, Institute of Chinese Studies Dean Assoc Prof Dr Chong Siou Wei, Tun Tan Cheng Lock Centre for Social and Policy Studies Chairperson Assoc Prof Dr Chin Yee Mun, Centre for International Studies Chairperson Dr Ho Ying Chan and Division of Community and International Networking Director Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn.

During the meeting, Prof Ewe first expressed his warm welcome to the delegates. In order to enhance the mutual understanding, he shared the background and the latest accomplishments attained by UTAR. He also shared the University’s past collaboration with institutions and proposed several possible areas for collaboration. Prof Shi, on the other hand, shared the purpose of the visit and his experience in Malaysia. According to him, the visit aimed to stimulate partnerships within the Belt and Road countries, which could result in more international collaboration.

After the discussion, both parties reached consensus to develop collaboration by initiating joint research project related to Belt and Road Initiative, particularly focusing on Malaysian public perception on socio-economic, cultural and educational implication. Among other matters discussed at the meeting included research visits, joint thesis supervision, staff and students exchange between two institutions, joint conference and forum. 

The discussion wrapped up with an exchange of souvenirs, followed by a group photo session.
