Prof Yow is new VP(IAD) of UTAR

Ir Prof Dr Yow Ho Kwang commenced his position as the new Vice President (VP) of Internationalisation & Academic Development (IAD) of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) from 16 September 2019.

Prof Yow graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (First Class Honours) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1992 and he completed his PhD in the same field in 1995, both at The University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. He subsequently completed his post-doctoral research associate in the same university in 1997.

He is also a Professor attached with the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science in UTAR Sungai Long Campus. He was the former Deputy Dean as well as the former Dean of the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science. Prior to that, he was a Professor and Dean of Engineering with the Faculty of Engineering at Multimedia University.

Prof Yow has spent short stints with the industry, working in the areas of III-V semiconductor-based optoelectronic device and processing, with Siemens Components (Advanced Technology) in Malacca; with Phosistor Technologies Inc in California, USA; and with several local training consulting companies.

He has more than 25 years of research experience working in semiconductor material and device related technology, and has authored/co-authored about 67 technical international journal papers and conference papers, mainly in GaAs-GaInP HBTs, Defect Detection in Silicon wafers and Semiconducting Materials Applications. His current research interests include nanoscale MOS Devices, low-cost nanomaterials for electronic applications, advanced packaging for electronic products, polymer/organic-based light emitting devices (LEDs) and solar cells.

Prof Yow is a registered Professional Engineer with a practicing certificate with the Board of Engineers Malaysia. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, USA, and a member of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia. He is involved in providing consulting and training services to training consulting companies in Malaysia, in the areas of cleanroom technology, semiconductor wafer processing and fabrication, semiconductor materials and devices, and technical article writing, interacting with engineers from Texas Instruments, Keysights Technologies, Broadcom Technologies, National Semiconductor, Intel, Renesas Semiconductor, and Infineon technologies, to name a few.

Among his other expertise consultancy works include Technology Assessment for STAR Grant and Multimedia Grant Scheme. He is also Journal Reviewer for IEEE Electron Device Letter, Journal of Applied Polymer Science, Material Science and Engineering B, Journal of Electrochemical Society, Applied Materials and Interface, and Journal of Alloy and Compound, USA.

Prof Yow has more than 20 years of teaching experience in the course areas of Solid State Electronics, Optoelectronics, Power Electronics, Semiconductor Materials and Devices, Device Processing and Technology, for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.

With Prof Yow’s vast experience in academia and the industry, he has much to offer to the university as the Vice President. UTAR proudly welcomes Prof Yow as its new Vice President of Internationalisation and Academic Development and looks forward to his contribution and leadership.
