Joe Ng presenting his slides Joe began the talk by briefly explaining the mission and character of Cambridge University Press and the current landscape of academic publishing. “In today’s landscape, there are over 33,000 journal articles that have been published, excluding 9,400 journals which are non-English. There are also more than 3 million articles and 200,000 new books published each year, with Science, Technology and Mathematics (STM) receiving a profit of $25billion from it and Humanities and Social Sciences acquiring $2.4billion annually,” said Joe Ng.

From there, he talked about how the journal articles and books are published after being accepted, and the process it has to undergo. He noted that authors have a specific deadline to deliver their manuscript to the publisher and exclusively for book authors, they must hand in their full manuscript, instead of submitting it chapter by chapter. He also said that after the manuscript is submitted in a specific form such as PDF and Word, it undergoes copy-editing which is the checking of grammatical errors and consistency of English. After that, it is sent back to the author for typesetting or proofreading, which takes about one to two weeks.

After that, Joe Ng explained how books indexing and bibliography or references are handled, and also other minor details such as supplementary material, bibliographic data and metadata. He also spoke about the types of book covers, its sizes and the parts included in it.

The talk ended with a brief Q&A session.
