ATSE conducts webinar on STEM resources

The e-KLESF 2020 hosted an exclusive webinar by the Australia Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE) on 15 December 2020 featuring ATSE Executive Manager Schools Program Peter Pentland who presented “Remote Learning STEM Resources for Teachers.” The webinar which was hosted at Zoom and shared through Facebook saw more than 200 views.

Peter Pentland explaining the application of STELR program

At the webinar, participants were shown STEM resources that can be used for distance education and in the classroom, which can be downloaded from Science and Technology Education Leveraging Relevance (STELR). “STELR is an in-curriculum, school education initiative based around hands-on-learning using STELR and other equipment. At the same time, it teaches science, maths and technology curricula using sustainability contexts that are relevant to students. STELR strongly focused on inquiry-based learning which eventually encourages students to consider Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) careers,” said Peter as he introduced STELR.

He added, “STELR is truly a STEM program. It is interdisciplinary as we use a lot of information technology, mathematic, science and engineering. STELR is also problem-based with real-world projects. Students can work independently and collaboratively, and they are encouraged to ask questions. Class sets of STELR equipment are currently being used in over 810 schools. Among the curriculum resources developed are renewable energy, solar cars, sustainable housing, climate change and oceans, future health, water in the 21st century and many more. The stand-alone package includes case studies, career profiles and teacher toolkit activities.”
