CFS provides math skills for differently-abled people

Aimed at equipping mentally-challenged people with some useful experience in carrying out their daily routines and to expose them to a new learning environment, UTAR Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Kampar Campus successfully organised a community project called “Inspire to Aspire 1.0” on 27 November 2019 at its Kampar Campus.

Attended by six participants with disabilities and two helpers from the Beautiful Gate Educational Centre for the Disabled, the community project was facilitated by a total of 11 Mathematics lecturers from CFS’s Department of Science and Engineering as well as by a team of six student helpers.

The project taught the participants to perform a simple calculation using real money and coins. It also provided a hands-on platform for participants to learn reading time by exploring cardboard clocks. It was then followed by an engaging shopping game which allowed the participants to apply the skills learnt earlier in the programme to solve problems on counting and time recognition.

Among the lecturers involved in the project were the Head of Department of Science and Engineering Ooi Siew Fong; and its lecturers Elaine Lau Ying Man, Chuah Puoi Choo and Chong Fook Seng. The programme ended with a certificate presentation to every participant by CFS Director Tan Lee Siew and it was followed by a group photograph.
