UTAR organised safety awareness activities at SJK (C) Yik Chiao, Negeri Sembilan to enhance the safety and security of children at school. The event took place on 19 October 2019.

The activities included talks on safety issues and emergency preparedness tactics to help children keep themselves safe and teach them what dangers to look out for. Four black belt taekwondo practitioners were also appointed to teach the students some defensive techniques and skills so that the students could learn to protect themselves and understand the culture of Taekwondo. Besides, the event also included station games which aimed to strengthen the spirit of understanding and cooperation among students.

The safety talk provided information on the necessary precautions needed to be taken to prevent possible accidents

Wong Pieng Han, the principal of SJK (C) Yik Chiao, said that previously UTAR conducted STEM workshops at the school, however, this was the first time that the University has organised a safety awareness activity. He hoped that the children could learn lessons from the event and gain values such as self-discipline and cooperation. According to him, the school has added a subject, namely Reka Bentuk dan Teknologi (RBT) to provide knowledge on safety for primary school students. He was grateful that this event had provided the students with the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom.
