Malaysian GMM hosts a webinar on improving memory

In this modern age, it is no secret that many people have trouble remembering things. As such, to negate this problem, a webinar titled “Boost Your Memory” was organised by the Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC) in collaboration with Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement (MMLM) of Sungai Long Campus on 2 July 2020 via Zoom.

The main speaker of the webinar was Grandmaster of Memory (GMM) Wong Wan Jiun. It was moderated by DSSC Assistant Manager Lim Jia Jia. The webinar was meant to provide insights to students on how their memory works, such as the biological process, and teach them various methods to improve it.

Wong introducing himself

Wong began the webinar by introducing himself and the mentors who had helped him in his journey to achieve this respective title. From there, he debunked the misconceptions that people have about memories and explained its definition. “We have around one billion neurons in our brain, so as we consistently use our brain, these neurons form connections with other neurons faster, and thus, we learn and remember things more efficiently,” said Wong.

Throughout the entire webinar, Wong conducted memory tests, quizzes and surveys with the participants to test their memorising skills. They were more than willing to partake in the activities and Wong was very impressed by their ability to remember so many numbers and words in a short while.

At the end of the webinar, Wong taught the participants a specific technique to further improve their memory efficiency. “The brain is more perceptive towards pictures, so it stores them for a longer time instead of words, thus, you should visualise the words you read to remember them more easily,” he said. He added, “When studying, you do not have to remember all the information. Cut out the facts that are not important. You should also try to understand what you memorise so that it will be much simpler for you to remember and apply the information.”

A short Q&A session was held after the talk.
