China-ASEAN Business Association
(CABA), Farlim Holding Sdn Bhd and UTAR
signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) for research on Shandong - ASEAN
Economic Cooperation Collaboration on 15 July 2020 at Pullman KLCC Hotel and
Residences, Kuala Lumpur.
Signing the agreement were UTAR
President Ir Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat, Farlim Holding Sdn Bhd Chairman Tan Sri
Dato’ Seri Lim Gait Tong and CABA Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohd Iqbal
while witnessing the signing ceremony were UTAR Vice President for
Internationalisation and Academic Development Ir Prof Dr Yow Ho Kwang,
Farlim Holdings Sdn Bhd Director Lim Chu Dick and CABA Vice President Dato’
Bong Hon Liong.
The main objective of this
research was to analyse and identify areas for economic cooperation between
Malaysia and Shandong and to provide key information for the formulation of
strategies to promote sustainable economic cooperation between Shandong and
ASEAN countries. The research study would be headed by Belt and Road
Strategic Research Centre (BRSRC) Chairperson Prof Dr Cheng Ming Yu.
Tan Sri Lim said in his opening
remarks, “Since the establishment in 2017, CABA has been committed to
promoting economic, trade and investment exchanges between China and ASEAN
as well as expanding ASEAN’s economic and trade territory in the provinces
north of the Yangtze River in China, especially the Shandong and
Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Collaborative Zone. Shandong province was selected due
to its strategic location. UTAR will carry out the China-ASEAN Economic
Cooperation Research in the next six months whereby the research will focus
on issues at several levels, including the past and current economic and
trade relations between China and ASEAN, new areas of cooperation that need
attention in the future, and the prospects for Shandong-ASEAN economic and
trade cooperation.”
In his speech, Prof Ewe said,
“Today’s MoA is another important initiative in the expanding
collaborative ties between China and Malaysia particularly in the area of
economic research that will be mutually beneficial to both economies. With
the dynamic changes and unexpected challenges that have impacted the world
economy over the last five months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is
imperative to conduct research before any economic strategies are
formulated. It will be even more impactful if the research is done in
collaboration with key partners who are willing to share expertise and
resources. UTAR is truly pleased to be part of this combined collaborative
effort to ultimately achieve the goal of enhancing the China-ASEAN bilateral
trade volume and fostering closer economic and socio-cultural cooperation
between China and ASEAN.”
Also present at the signing
ceremony were CABA Advisor Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, CABA Vice President Tan
Kai Hee, CABA Vice President Dato’ Goh Hin San, Farlim Holdings Sdn Bhd
Director Wong Hon Weng, BRSRC Chairperson Prof Cheng and members from CABA
and Farlim Holdings Sdn Bhd.
