Film screening and talk on hill blasting activities
UTAR Student Development Committee (SDC) of Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Kampar Campus successfully organised a documentary film screening and a talk session titled “Kinta Valley” on 28 February 2020 at its Kampar Campus.
Directed by a talented local director, Lai Kim Koon, the film aimed to promote the natural beauty of the hills and greeneries surrounding the Kinta Valley in Perak, whilst raising awareness about the limestone hill blasting activities which involved some of the oldest hills around the valley.
The film began with the story of an old man who enthused in the environmental movement and worked hard to protect the hills. He protested against the hill blasting company and encountered numerous challenges in pursuing the concept of environmental protection. In the second part of the film, few geological experts and relevant individuals were interviewed. The audiences were informed regarding the current situations of hill blasting incidents as well as the effects of hill blasting to the historically valuable ancient hills and natural ecosystem.
The talk after the film screening session was conducted by Founder-cum-Director of Cao Min Entertainment Sdn Bhd Lai Kim Koon. It was conducted in the Chinese language and translated into English by Lai’s wife, Sylvia Lim. Sylvia Lim is also the producer of Cao Min Entertainment. In the talk, Lai shared his shooting tips and techniques, as well as his inspirations in the shooting of local indie films.
The film screening and talk session ended with a short Q&A session between the speakers and the participants.
“It is indeed an insightful experience for all the students and lecturers who were present throughout the event. We hope that there will be more to come in the coming semesters,” said CFS lecturer Suraiza Samsudin.
