History and aspirations on the Rukun Negara

In conjunction with Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day 2020, a webinar discussing the significance of Rukun Negara in uniting Malaysians was held on 15 September 2020 via Microsoft Teams.

Titled “Rukun Negara: Ikrar Warga Malaysia”, the webinar was a collaboration between UTAR Department of Soft Skills Competency and Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI). Two FCI lecturers, namely Dr Charanjit Kaur Darshan Singh and Tamil Arasi Muniandy comprehensively explained and shared their thoughts on the understanding and perspective of the five pillars that became the guide and principal in shaping a Malaysian identity.

“When the country was hit with tragedy in May 1969, democracy was in threat as the law of emergency took over. After that, Rukun Negara was established to remind and preserve democratic values in Malaysia,” said Tamil in her session.

Dr Charanjit’s session discussed the aspirations and challenges of Rukun Negara in the current world. In her session, Dr Charanjit shared the debate on the practicality of the Rukun Negara that was raised by local politicians and prominent figures.
