Joining the Huawei family since October 2019, alumnus Toh Wooi Yek shared his experience working and living abroad in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He graduated from Bachelor of International Business (Honours) and Master of Business Administration from the Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM).

“Obtaining my degree and Master’s in UTAR was certainly helpful for my current job because the programmes were designed to enable graduates and potential candidates to secure a managerial position in an organisation. The programmes also provided me with a diverse range of managerial knowledge, techniques, and best practices from the industry in order for me to remain competitive in the business environment,” said Toh.

He added, “With UTAR constantly updating its programme syllabus, students are assured to get the latest information, knowledge, and skills that will enable their development of a holistic view of the business. This will also deepen their understanding of social, cultural and ethical issues. I am glad the programmes had prepared me well and provided me with the foundation I need to adapt to working and living abroad.”

He currently works as a Procurement Manager, with his role focusing mainly on purchasing, marketing, and human resources services throughout the UAE.  He also mentioned that he enjoys the working culture of Huawei because the company constantly encourages employees to learn and develop. He emphasised that the opportunity for continuous learning was important for growth and development, similarly to how UTAR has also encouraged students to engage in continuous learning.

When asked of adapting life in UAE, he said 90% of the residents in UAE are expats and Asian food is easily found. He also finds that the UAE offers good quality of living, and good safety and security. He hopes that his juniors and potential candidates who are interested to work aboard to consider applying to Huawei as working there will broaden their horizon and expand their experiences.
