The Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM) organised a free webinar titled “Building a Resilient Career during Covid-19 Pandemic” on 10 August 2020 via Zoom. The webinar saw more than 60 participants comprising of UTAR staff, students and members of the public. The webinar aimed to provide students with the opportunity to learn from the experts and obtain current industry insight. It also aimed to improve their learning experience in a more interactive, topic-specific way.

Invited as the speaker was Vivahomes Realty and Viva Cheras Group Branch Head Elvyn Lim, a UTAR alumnus, who started venturing into the real estate industry as a part-time negotiator back in 2007 at PTL Realty. His excellent track records enabled him to be promoted as a leader in the agency. In 2013, he joined Vivahomes Realty as an agency director and was awarded ‘Nationwide Best Performance Manager’. Today, he leads eight team managers and 80 negotiators. The session was moderated by FAM lecturer Amalina binti Azmi. Also present at the webinar were FAM Department of Building and Property Management Head Low Chin Kian.

Lim sharing his work experience

Lim started by sharing his experience on how he built his career and provided tips to students to prepare themselves for their future career. He also explained how Covid-19 impacts Malaysia’s economy and Malaysian’s reactions towards the Movement Control Order as well as Malaysians who are out of jobs or those who had to deal with reduced salaries.

Lim said, “Being resilient means we need to find a way to quickly recover from a difficult condition. All of us need to accept change as an opportunity for growth, and challenge and adapt to it. I always believe that when there is a crisis, opportunity will arise as well. Put effort in everything you do and start today, not tomorrow! Do not delay and give yourself any excuses to stop yourself from moving forward. In life, we must be able to accept failure although we may not like the feeling of failing. Without the feeling of failing, we won’t understand what it feels like to be successful.”

He added, “Invest time in your work to improve yourself. Focus on what you have but at the same time improve yourself. Don’t hope for the best to come to you and at the same time be prepared for the worst to come. It is important to have a good attitude and develop a positive mindset as it will influence your career.”    He advised the participants, “What do you want to do in life? Set a deadline for yourself to get the plan ready. Identify what is the problem and look for a solution to address the problem. Remember to spend your time wisely as each of us is given an equal amount of time each day. It is up to us on how we decide to use the time. There is no time for procrastination.”

The webinar was followed by a Q&A session and a photography session.
