Huawei Connected Campus 2021

Taking into consideration the Covid-19 situation, UTAR Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FICT) and Huawei Technologies Malaysia Sdn Bhd co-organised the Huawei Connected Campus 2021 via Facebook Live and Instagram Live on 11 March 2021. The event also featured a virtual career talk for its participants.

The aims of the event were to provide students with an accessible platform to register for the virtual interview sessions and encourage them to build a connected world together with Huawei by learning about the 5G technology.  The UTAR students were also encouraged to register themselves on Huawei’s career portal via a link provided on a Facebook page, namely Huawei Connected Campus.

Hosted by Huawei Technologies Malaysia Human Resource Department staff Angeline Sea, the online event kick-started with a short video clip on Huawei Story and Corporate, an opening speech by Huawei Technologies Malaysia Human Resource Department Director Choh Yau Meng and Huawei 2021 Campus Recruitment Video.

Choh said in the opening speech, “Congratulations as you are one step closer to embarking on a journey towards your dream job. We have recruited more than 400 students from the graduating cohorts in 2020. The large number of students we have recruited is actually the testimony of the quality of our Malaysian graduates. As of 2021, we have planned to further expand our Malaysia talent development programme. We have decided to hire more than 500 Malaysian graduates. You will not only be given an opportunity to work in Huawei Malaysia but also overseas where Huawei has its presence. I believe you will be contributing to develop your country, home and community, just like a thousand of your seniors did.”

A career talk titled “How 5G Will Transform the Way We Live and Work” was given by Huawei Technologies Malaysia Asia Pacific Business & Network Consulting Department Senior Managing Consultant Sepideh Sahari. The talk focused on Huawei and 5G technology revolution, the 5G progress about the joint innovation with Major Global Customers and Partners, the 5G applications, the example of Global use cases for consumers and industries, the Malaysia 5G trial use cases such as the 5G Malaysia demonstration projects – 5G Langkawi as well as some Huawei 5G End-to-End (E2E) solutions and activities.

“Huawei is not only a device manufacturer, in fact, Huawei is a leading global provider of ICT infrastructure. It started about 13 years ago (1987) in Shenzhen, China while manufacturing phone switches. Huawei expanded its business to include building telecommunications networks, providing operational and consulting services and equipment to enterprises inside and outside of China, and manufacturing communications devices for the consumer market,” said Sepideh.

According to Sepideh, Huawei has included 188,000 intelligence and dedicated employees working across the group in more than 170 countries. She added, “We keep improving ourselves and keep investing in our R&D, with more than 80,000 R&D employees and we have in total 14 R&D institutes, labs and centres in different regions. In 2019, Huawei was listed in the 500 Fortune Global and was listed no. 68 in Interbrand’s Top 100 Best Global Brands. Among the 188,000 employees, about 70% of them were hired locally.”

While explaining the 5G era, Sepideh told the participants, “Now in the 5G era, we can have internet speed that is more than 1Gbps and this is the real-world application. This is not only about working on mobile phones, downloading or watching videos, it is about connecting with the whole world. This era is about the Internet of things (IoT), smart city, connected car, AR or VR, cloud gaming, etc. With the 5G internet speed, it only needs about 3.6 seconds to download an HD movie and it is equal to asking the question, ‘has it downloaded yet?’. The transition from 2G to 3G may not be so different, but moving from 3G to 4G brought a big difference. Now I can see that moving from 4G to 5G will bring a bigger difference."

She then added, “The 5G drives mobile broadband to a new horizon and serves digital transformation. First of all, it has unlimited MBB that we can experience Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). Now we can even do remote surgery with the 5G application. Everything can be controlled remotely with ultra-reliable and low latency communication. Besides, we will also have massive machine type connection with 5G applications such as smart home and smart city.”

The event ended with a sharing session by two UTAR alumni, namely Huawei Technologies Malaysia Accounting Shared Services Center Subsidiary Financial Report Management Department Senior Accounting Associate Chew Tzyy Chien who graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Huawei Technologies Malaysia Network Assurance & Technology Department Fixed Network Engineer (Datacom) Phang Kam Ping who graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic.

Chew told the participants that the working environment and people in Huawei were really awesome, “Most of the departments in Huawei have a strong solution support team to help you out and they give quality training consistently to support your job scope as if they are trying to develop your ability to perform your job instead of letting you learn it by yourself.”

Phang encouraged the fresh graduates to join Huawei as the company provides great learning plan and training programme that helped him to adapt to the production pace more quickly. He enthused, “In addition, Huawei has given me the opportunity to attend training in China to learn the pioneered technology so that we are always equipped with the best skillsets for our works.”

Besides the career talk and alumni sharing session, there were also three lucky draws. The lucky draw prizes included Mate 30 Pro, Huawei Watch GT2 and Huawei TalkBand G5.
