UTAR celebrates e-Convocation with gleaming performances

To create a fun-filled and memorable celebration, the UTAR e-Convocation, held on 21 August 2021, made its second comeback of the year with more gleaming performances by UTAR students and alumni via YouTube Live.

Many UTAR students and alumni put in their best efforts to come forward to show their love and support for the graduates who were about to venture into another journey in life by sending their dedicated video performances and best wishes. It was indeed heartwarming as it simultaneously showcased the dazzling talents of the UTAR community.

Opening performance by 24 Festival Drums Club of Kampar Campus

“Hitting” off the opening ceremony was the incredible performance brought by the 24 Festival Drums Club of Kampar Campus with its "da-dum-dum-dum-da" beats, full of life energy and joyful sound, bringing chills and excitement to the e-Convocation. The members were Biochemistry student Lew Chin Yet, Banking and Finance student Poon Tat Chi, Advertising student Wong Yong Bin, Food Science student Chan Chi Lam, Psychology student Melanie Soo Yu Teng and Biotechnology student Amy Chua Jia Xuan.

It was then followed by an amazing group performance brought by UTAR staff, alumni and students performing the rendition of “Saya Anak Malaysia” to promote the spirit of unity, love and the feeling of being proud to be a Malaysian.

Alison Yoon singing “Moments” by Julie Durden

The next performance was a mesmerizing individual singing performance by UTAR alumna Alison Yoon who sang a graduation song titled “Moments” by Julie Durden. It was followed by another singing performance by Marketing student Chuah Yong Xiu; she sang “亲爱的朋友” by 棉花糖Katncandix2.

Alumni, graduates and students performing a wonderful mashup song titled “将心照亮+ We Are The World”

The e-Convocation also witnessed a wonderful mashup song titled “将心照亮+ We Are The World” performed by Chemistry student Ho Jia Ni, Actuarial Science student Huah Jing Ying, Early Childhood Education student Phoebe Yap Soong Yee, Broadcasting student Sherene Lau Siu Wei, Quantity Surveying student Sylvester Tang Zuo Ying and Mechanical Engineering student Tan Juen Sheng; August 2021 graduates Lim Wan Qi, Ng Xuan Xuan and Steven Shum Joe Yin; UTAR alumni Chang Mei Chee, Ma Vi Anne, Lee Sook Yan and Chew Kelven. The song hopes to bring the message that we  can change the world, despite the pandemic, and make it a brighter and better place for everyone by contributing what we can and illuminating the heart of others whom we touch. It was specially dedicated to all students and graduates who have braved through the challenging times of the pandemic.

UTAR Sungai Long Chinese Orchestra performing “Stand By Me”

The UTAR Sungai Long Campus Chinese Orchestra Unit on the other hand dedicated a special performance titled “Stand By Me”. The members were Electronic and Communications Engineering student Tan Chun Lin, Accounting students Ng Shi Han and Ho Jia Wen, Software Engineering students Tham Kai Ming and Lai Wen Khai, Civil Engineering students Koh Li-Shen and Cheah Seang Wooi, Chinese Medicine student Bernice Khaw Xin Yi, and International Business students Yee Ming Yi and Foong Jing Qi.

The e-convocation then ended with a remarkable performance by UTAR students Alyssa Rebecca Ng Tian Yii, Veronica Chin Choy Fong, Anna Sharmini, Lai Jin Hua, Choe Kit Foong and Chen Yit Bin. They are students from Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Early Childhood Education, Foundation in Science, Mechatronics Engineering, Master of Chinese Studies and Biomedical Engineering, respectively. They put up a captivating performance by singing the UTAR song “The Shining Light” by Nadya Supian.

The performances were recorded separately in the comfort of their homes before they were combined as tribute videos to ensure that the standard of operation set by the government due to the Covid-19 is not breached.
