Financial freedom for youth

Aimed at educating youth on the importance of effective financial planning, the appropriate ways for financial planning and the benefits of the resulting financial freedom, UTAR Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF), UTAR Financial Economics Society (FES), and Persatuan Siswazah Wanita Malaysia (PSWM) jointly organised a webinar titled “Financial Freedom for Youth” on 20 November 2021 via Microsoft Teams.

 Invited to speak at the webinar were Department of Insolvency Senior Assistant Director Hemy Annerina binti Haja Mydin from the Selangor branch and Global Dynamics Principal Consultant Karthigesu Sivalingam. It was moderated by PSWM Vice President Prof Dr Catherine and FBF student Chong Wat Son.

The webinar kicked off with a welcome speech by FBF Dean Assoc Prof Dr Au Yong Hui Nee and  PSWM President Datin Fauziah Ramly.

Hemy started her talk titled “Setting the Scene and Current Statistics on Indebtedness” and explained the reasons that led to bankruptcy, preventions of bankruptcy and the various consequences of bankruptcy.

Karthigesu, on the other hand, explained the characteristics of financial freedom and positive financial habits. “Financial freedom is the ability of an individual to be debt-free, to walk away from employment without any dent in his or her finance, to live a dream lifestyle, as well as to have good health, time, wealth and happiness,” said Karthigesu.

In conclusion, the webinar has effectively and efficiently fulfilled its objective in terms of equipping the participants well with financial planning knowledge to prevent them from being plagued by financial issues such as debt insolvency and others alike.

The webinar ended with an interactive and insightful Q&A session and a group photography session.
