UTAR President Ir Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat
was reappointed as one of the advisors for the Caring School Programme
(Program Sekolah Penyayang).
The programme, revived under Caring School 2.0, was initially aimed at
assisting pupils who were not academically-inclined to make their way into
secondary school and reduce the dropout rate at Chinese schools.
The revival was described by the Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Mah Hang
Soon as “good news” for the 400 Chinese schools that used to take part in
the programme, the board of governors concerned and parents and teachers
before it was halted in 2018.
Since 2005, more than 400 Chinese schools have taken part in the programme.
The goal of the programme changed in 2013 to promote comprehensive education
among Chinese school pupils, nurturing human capital to be versatile and of
good character through outreach activities in and out of classrooms. The
programme included a ‘Flower Bud Education Award’ in 2014 to recognise the
efforts of school board members, parent-teacher association members and
parents. A revised version on the guidelines and a short introduction film
was then launched in 2016 for schools across the country.
