Virtual leadership and teambuilding camp for SJK (C) Kampung Baru Paroi students

UTAR Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC) of Sungai Long Campus collaborated with UTAR students to organise UTAR ‘We Care We Act’ Virtual Leadership and Teambuilding Camp on 24 and 25 May 2021. The community service targeted primary school students at SJK (C) Kampung Baru Paroi, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. The platform used to conduct the virtual camp was Google Meet. The main objective of this virtual camp was to develop leadership skills and instill the importance of teamwork among the students.

The virtual camp was led by DSSC staff Choon Wen Kie and Kenneth Tan together with seven UTAR students, namely Chin Man Fai, Lai Kah Wei, Ng En Ci, Ong Ji Wern, Tan Yixin, Yap Chen Kong and Tan Khai Xuan. The participants involved were school prefects, class monitors and librarians of SJK (C) Kampung Baru Paroi. There were two sessions held and the participants were divided into two groups for each session. The first session saw students from Standard One to Standard Three in the first group and students from Standard Four to Standard Six in the second group. For the second session, school librarians from Standard Three to Five were involved.

Several fun and meaningful group tasks were prepared by the committee to train the leadership skills of the students. After the virtual camp, students were able to learn that a good leader is also a good observer and role model for their followers. During the closing ceremony, SJK (C) Kampung Baru Paroi Vice Principal Chew Meng Li thanked UTAR and the committee for organising the virtual camp for their students. The programme offered a great opportunity for students in SJK(C) Kampung Baru Paroi to enjoy the activities virtually without concerning the distance to travel. One of the UTAR students, Tan Yixin said that she was glad to be able to contribute to society by organising this event. She also hoped that more UTAR students will involve themselves in meaningful community service such as this in the future.

This event is associated with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 - Quality Education and SDG 10 - Reduced Inequality as it provides quality education to the students in suburban areas and contributes to reducing the inequality in social status.
