UTAR
Department of Soft Skills Competency
(DSSC) of Sungai Long Campus collaborated with UTAR students to organise
UTAR ‘We Care We Act’ Virtual Read with Community Camp on 19 June 2021. The
community service targeted primary school students from
San Hao
Xue Tang,
Jenjarom, Selangor. The platform used to conduct the virtual camp was Zoom.
The main objective of this virtual camp was to enhance students’ language
skills, mainly English.
The virtual camp was led by DSSC staff Choon Wen Kie and Kenneth Tan together with seven UTAR students, namely Lai Kah Wei, Ong Ji Wern, Tan Jing Jie, Ang Lin, Hoo Pei Jing, Loke Zhe Wei and Choo Car Men. The participants involved were mostly primary school students aged between seven to twelve years old. There were two activity sessions held and a storytelling session was carried out before each activity. The 13 participants were divided into two groups and each group was in charge of a session. Most of the students were actively involved in every session.
The meaningful group tasks prepared by the committee aimed to improve the language skills of the students. After the virtual camp, students were able to learn English vocabulary through the educational sessions conducted.
San Hao
Xue Tang teacher Venerable You Qing thanked
UTAR and the committee for organising the virtual camp for her students. She
said, “UTAR offered a great opportunity for students in San Hao
Xue
Tang
to enjoy the activities virtually without worrying about the problems and
issues caused by the pandemic. I am glad to see that the students are
actively participating and enjoying themselves.”
