UTAR partnered with UOBAM (Malaysia) to provide financial literacy and investment training programme for undergraduates

The virtual signing ceremony made provision for future collaboration

UTAR and UOB Asset Management (Malaysia) (UOBAM (Malaysia)) formalised a partnership to provide financial literacy and investment training programme for UTAR undergraduates. Under the three-year collaboration, both organisations have also agreed to provide an internship programme that prepares students to become successful wealth planners in the future. 

A virtual memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony was conducted via Zoom on 5 May 2021 to commemorate the partnership. UTAR was represented by its President Ir Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat and UOBAM (Malaysia) was represented by its Chief Executive Officer Lim Suet Ling.  

Also present at the ceremony were UOB Asset Management (Malaysia) Chief Marketing Officer Edwin Lee Wai Kidd, Business Support and Marketing Communications Vice President Ho Chuan Yew, Business Support and Marketing Communications Senior Executive Lee Wei Xin, UTAR Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM) Dean Dr Sia Bee Chuan, Centre for Entrepreneurial Sustainability Chairperson Dr Mohammad Falahat, Division of Community and International Networking (DCInternet) Director Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn, DCInternet Deputy Director Dr Chen, I-Chi, Department of Accountancy Head Dr Lim Wan Leng, FAM Dr Tee Peck Ling, FAM Senior Lecturer Ung Leng Yean and FAM Lecturer Raymond Ling Leh Bin.

Under the MoU, UOBAM (Malaysia) will provide a series of seminars, talks and workshops to UTAR students. The topics will be related to the investment industry, global economic and market outlook, stock selection fundamentals and technical analysis, and the impact of fintech development on the investment industry. In addition, selected UTAR students will also have the opportunity to experience on-the-job training during a three-month practical internship programme with UOBAM (Malaysia).

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof Ewe said, “Today’s MoU is a significant start for both parties that will bring much benefits to the students while providing opportunities for our students to do an internship and contribute to UOB Asset Management. We are thankful for your willingness to share your vast industry experience and knowledge with our students through your webinars and talks especially in the area of Finance and Fintech.” He further thanked UOBAM (Malaysia) for their generous sponsorship in UTAR student competitions and also thanked the organisation for providing students with job and internship placement. He also took the opportunity to thank UOBAM (Malaysia)  for providing the two awards to UTAR students—the Top Achiever Award for Personal Financial Planning and Best Graduate Award for Bachelor of Finance (Honours) Financial Technology.

“I would like to sincerely thank everyone who is involved in this joint effort. All of these are in line with our goals to ensure quality education and to ensure that students remain competitive. I am confident that through our efforts and commitment, we will be able to achieve more and conduct impactful activities together,” he added. 

Lim looking forward to establishing beneficial collaborations with UTAR

On the other hand, Lim said, “We are honoured to be given the opportunity to collaborate with a renowned tertiary institution such as UTAR. Education plays an important ingredient in building knowledge and talent among students for the future of our country and society. In this regard, UTAR has played an important role since it was established to produce graduates in various fields of studies for the needs of the country.”

She added, “UOBAM (Malaysia) is proud of this achievement, and the signing of the MoU today is a testimony of our support to UTAR. UOBAM (Malaysia) is proud to support an industry-academic initiative as part of our effort to nurture young talent so that they can become future industry leaders.” 

In addition to offering a training and internship programme under the MoU, UOBAM (Malaysia) will also collaborate with UTAR in initiating industrial research and consultancy projects in the areas of technology and social innovation. The findings of these research and consultancy projects will then be jointly published for UOBAM clients, as well as the investing community and the general public.
