Developing growth mindset through EdTech

In order to introduce SoroTouch to the public and enable participants to gain a growth mindset and achieve confidence in numbers, a webinar titled “Developing Growth Mindset Through EdTech” was organised on 31 October 2021 via Zoom and Facebook Live.

The webinar was organised in conjunction with the e-KLESF 2021, which was held from 23 October to 31 October 2021. Invited to be the speaker for the webinar was Founder of Ai Tech House-cum-Malaysian Human Calculator West Wong.

“Pandemic has changed the landscape of the world in a lot of ways but we believe that by having a growth mindset it would bring you to the next level and help you navigate through all the crisis and level up yourself to a different game,” said West Wong.

As he mentioned about the growth mindset, he said, “We want to build a strong foundation of ability development for the kids since they are young. Mathematics is about calculation ability. We want to help them build confidence in the numbers and enjoy doing calculations. It will build a very strong foundation for them; help them to explore different parts of mathematics as they grow. Then they will have an open mind to the learning of mathematics and from there they will build up the different interest in STEM.”

“In the process of building the foundation for Mathematics, it is important to help the kids to build a growth mindset and grit values,” said West Wong. He then elaborated on growth mindset and grit values which are important especially for the kids in the 21st century. He then introduced his technology called “SoroTouch” and explained how the technology could enhance the kids’ learning experiences as well as the learning outcomes which could cultivate a strong growth mindset and grit values among children.

He continued, “In the education landscape, there are two ways of doing the calculation. One is the writing method; the other is the mental calculation method. Ours is the mental calculation method inspired by the Abacus method. The Abacus method has been proven to be the fastest and most effective and efficient way in doing a calculation. He then explained how the combination of the abacus calculation method and SoroTouch Technology makes the calculation learning process more effective and engaging.

“There are three main core technologies or three main pillars in SoroTouch. The first one is the flip classroom concept; the second one is active learning and lastly is the adaptive learning technology. With these, the students can learn anytime and anywhere.” said West Wong as he explained the three main core technology. He added, “SoroTouch is a highly data-driven approach. For example on 30 October 2021, in total, SoroTouch students have completed 552,960 questions. This data will provide feedback to our system so that we can improve the system and give a better question and better learning experience and outcome for the kids.”

On top of that, he also shared the essence of STEM and 21st-century skills, the importance of 4Cs (Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Creativity) in the 21st century and how SoroTouch can help the kids to achieve the highest level in Bloom’s Taxonomy.

An online competition titled “MYSoroFES 2021” was then organised for Soro Kids to compete. It was a great opportunity to increase the kids’ mental calculation ability and motivate them to improve their skills to a higher level.
