Virtual English Day with SJK (C) Chung Hua and SJK (C) Kuo Min

UTAR Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC) of Sungai Long Campus collaborated with UTAR students to organise “We Care We Act” English Language Workshop on 2 October 2021. The community service targeted primary school students from SJK (C) Chung Hua, Mantin and SJK (C) Kuo Min, Nilai from Negeri Sembilan. The platform that was used to conduct the workshop was Google Meet. The main objective of the virtual workshop was to enhance students’ English language.

The virtual workshop was led by DSSC staff Choon Wen Kie, together with nine UTAR students, namely Ashley Ong Wan Zhen, Charis Yee Eng Hui, Chew Xin Ru, Georgina Ko Fang Ning, Jasmine Loke Hui Xia, Kok Wei Jin, Tan Tze Yi, Thulasini Balachandran and Yogabhayiravi Nadarajah. The workshop had a total of 68 participants, including 64 students and four teachers. The participants in the workshop were primary school students aged between 10 to 12 years old (Standard Four to Six). The workshop included one ice-breaking activity titled “Speed Answering” and three activities, namely “Interactive Story Telling”, “Which Word Don’t Fit” and “Connecting the Sentences”.

The workshop started with the team introduction. Each facilitator was introduced individually to the young participants. Next, they proceeded to play the ice-breaking activity —“Speed Answering”. The students were required to guess the missing words quickly from the pictures given to them. The next activity was called “Which Word Don’t Fit”. Before participating in the activity, the students were given a brief lesson about noun, verb, adjectives and adverbs. The activity required students to find words that are not similar to the given verb, noun, adjective, or adverbs. They were also required to find the synonyms of the word.

The next activity was called “Interactive Story Telling”. The students were shown a video regarding the Chinese New Year celebration and they were required to fill in the missing words from the sentences heard in the video earlier. For the second part of the activity, they were told to identify the names of the objects shown in the pictures related to the video earlier.  The last activity was called “Connecting the Sentences”, in which students were shown an order of pictures and sentences that were jumbled up and they were required to rearrange the sentences in a correct sequence to form a full story.

The students truly enjoyed the activities prepared by the committee and they felt excited while participating in the experiment. At the end of the workshop, students were able to gain a better understanding of the English language.

Throughout the entire session, the kids were really responsive towards our questions and they also participated actively throughout the games. I definitely gained a lot of experience being the emcee and facilitating this workshop. It definitely kept me busy during my semester break. I am looking forward to joining the other two events after this.”
